... Hello fellow users ~ So, among the many health problems/scares I've encountered in the past for which I've sought your support, this has to be the most serious. Unfortunately, it is a "lonely disease" in that apparently only strikes 1:1 million women...yes, only women get it. It is more gender-specific than breast cancer. Lucky us. As such, my quest for answers are... (2 replies)
Emphysema Stage 1

... If you stop smoking especially when you are just at stage 1, you can slow down the progression of emphysema drastically and you may stay at stage 1 and never progress to the latter stages of the disease but if you keep smoking it speeds up the disease. ... (3 replies)

... f all, there is no way to tell when you go from one stage to another. I will say it will happen sooner if you do not stop smoking. My mother was diagnosed with Emphysema in 1985 and it became Copd with Bronchitis and she lasted until December 2012. Lots of things can help, diet, exercise, pulmonary rehab. ... (3 replies)

Emphysema Stage 1

... You are so lucky to have your COPD diagnosed while in the early stage. I can tell you from experience that a lung infection can worsen your condition quickly and permanently, especially if you continue to smoke. Your future will then include expensive oxygen and inhaler treatments. Quitting smoking was one of the hardest things I ever did, but it is so worth it. The... (3 replies)
... I think your Dr. is dismissing how badly you feel, and not getting the point. If the Proair inhaler is helping some, a steroid inhaler added to it would probably help more. It works locally on the bronchial tubes to reduce inflammation and prevent the symptoms if used on a regular basis, not like a rescue inhaler that works right away on the bronchial spasm. I couldn't tell if... (8 replies)
... I was recently diagnosed with mild emphysema. I have not smoked in over 10 years and am not around second hand smoke or pollution. I was wondering if anyone else is in the same situation and do you know if since I do not smoke and do not have other exposure can the progression stop? I have many family members that have COPD and carry around oxygen tanks. I am hoping I do... (1 replies)

... oh wow, it's a difficult situation you're in. To put it basically, you can't help your dad. he has a lifetime of being the way he is, and now he's very sick. he'll never get better in the way that his lungs will improve, and basically I can only imagine it to feel like having asthma all the time with a feeling of suffocation. ... Howdy, Last month I was downgraded from Moderate to Severe COPD/Emphysema. Also, I've just been prescribed O2 therapy to boot. It's a bummer. I'm still employeed, and I finally have a job I really enjoy, but this O2 therapy (although desperately needed) is going to eventually put a strain on my employment situation. I'm only 60 years old, but I did smoke for over 40 years.... (6 replies)

... Three weeks ago my Doctor told me that i have Emphysema,i'm still smoking and i know that i need to stop but it is sooo hard. I've been smoking since i was 13 and i'm now 56. They need to take the chemicals out of all these cancer sticks, then i'm sure it would be easier for a lot of people to stop. (8 replies)
... That doesn't explain why emphysema continues to worsen after the cause is removed. There is obviously something which is present which continues to attack the lungs, and worsen the condition. ... (4 replies)

... If you look at a section of a normal lung it looks like a tight sponge, with all the little holes very close by. Emphysema lungs are like a sponge that has been ripped apart or stretched if you get my meaning. They will still work but very poorly. ... (4 replies)
