Hiya, Cough, phlegm and shortness of breath can be symptoms of COPD but the only way to diagnos COPD is through spirometry test, although X rays have some indication, they are never used to diagnos COPD. ... It sounds like the patient should be admitted for those symptoms. A couple of questions - What was his oxygen saturation and did he have a fever? What medications were ordered? ... See and ear nose and throat Doctor and get scoped to find out what is going on. They can usually tell if it is coming from sinus area. The other thing I would suggest is to just try an antihistamine over the counter and see if that helps. If it does then you are probably having allergy problems.
