I am 36 years old and have been smoking for about 18 years (there was about 2 years in that time that I did quit) usually smoke about half a pack a day (sometimes less - sometimes more).

It's possible you have what's called cough variant asthma or reactive airway syndrome.
Do you have it at night? after talking a lot? after raising your voice or laughing loudly? in the cold?
Have you seen a respirologist? Have you had any x-rays? Have you had any lung function... (2 replies)

... I highly recomend you see a pulmonologist. You can have an infection without having had a cold. When coughing up blood and phlem is a sign of something serious going on, be it TB, or MAC, or some other serious infection. ... (2 replies)
