I can't stop either-I have tried that stuff that's bitter that you put on, and I chew that off. I as well cannot wear artificial nails, as my nails are too short. I tried once, and they popped off after like a day. I will also sit there with a pocket knife, and pick at them. Don't know what to do...
You "pick and bite" because there is ragged skin from all the picking and biting. Schedule regular manicure appointments at your local salon. Regular manicures will help you to break the habit because they will help to eliminate the ragged skin and nails and get your nails back to a healthier state.

The nail plate is there to prevent damage to the delicate underlying tissues, the nerves and the blood supply to the fingertip. You could opt to wear white gloves all the time to prevent you from putting your fingers in your mouth, or you could tell everyone you know to bring it to your attention whenever they see you picking at or biting your nails.

Nail biting is an obsessive-compulsive habit, but like any habit, it CAN be broken if one has the will.

When I was VERY young, I used to bite at my nails. My mother gave me a bottle of red nail polish, but no polish remover. I put the polish on, and if I picked at them, the polish looked terrible, so I would apply more. Before the bottle was empty, I had quit biting my nails and she finally got me some remover to get it off. I have never bitten them since, and I think I was about 8 or 10 at that time.
