I've Had Nail Fungus For A Few Yrs Now And It's Getting Worse And Worse. It's Horribly Embarrasing. Painful, And Nasty! I Was On Lamisil For 7 Months, No Side Effects Thankfully. But After 7 Months I Saw No Difference/improvment At All. And My Extended Medical Didn'y Cover It, It Was Terribly Expensive. So I Quit Last Month. I Eat 1 Cup Of Yogurt Every Day, But I Will Increase It, And Check Into This Drink. Thanks For The Info, Hope It Works For Me Keep Your Finger Double Crossed Lol. I Took Some before Photos, So After 6-8 Weeks I'll Take Some More And We'll See What It Shows! I Also Soak My Toes In Vinegar (recently Started) It Takes Months To See A Diff But It Does Work. (did It Once Before When Only One Toes Was Affected, Then Got Lazy And Didn't Continue) Although My Toes Smell Constantly Of Vinegar! Lol It's Twice A Day Until Nail Grows Out Completely, Plus Another 4 Weeks Or So Maybe To Prvent More Growth.

Damn Fungus!

Thanks Again
thebluedog,
I had read your post with interest a few weeks ago after doing a google search for kefir and toenail fungus.
My saga: I had the fungus for several years without knowing what it was. I thought my big toenail was yellow from being discolored by nail polish. It became thicker over the years and the same thing started happening to my other big toe. That was basically the only two symptons for 5 or more years. Then two summers ago I had a terrible case of athelete's foot. Gradually my two nails started turning brown (small spot)with the telltale debris under the nail. Went to derm and was told it was a fungus--given a prescription for lamisil--worried about liver damage--started looking into natural cures. I started soaking my feet in vinegar and rubbing them with vicks at night and, sure enough, the nails started to clear. I did not fully research the cures, nor was I researching the susceptibility factors for this fungus. As summer was approaching, I stupidly polished my toenails and got lazy about soaking. Of course, the fungus started creeping back toward the nailbed, but was hidden by polish, so I didn't realize what was happening. What an idiot!
Back to sqare one: For years, I was a carbohydrate "junkie". Although not overweight, my diet was loaded with lots of white flour, cereals, and the like. I had symptons of candida, and started looking into probiotics. Cleaned up my diet gradually and started drinking kefir about a week ago. I started using vinegar again religiously about two months ago. There is now about a 1/4 inch of white at the base of my nail. I am also taking an anti-fungal from the health food store. I have also read that horsetail supplements will help with hair and nail growth, so I will start taking that as well as soon as I get to the store.
I have also read with interest about the thymol, and will consider purchasing some if the current protocol does not work.
I will keep you posted. Your nails seem to grow very quickily--did they grow as quickly before the kefir?
There are many, many testimonials on the web regarding vinegar, and I had some previous success with it, so I'll try again. The key, apparently, is not to miss one day of application, and it must be done twice a day--approx. 12 hours apart.
I'm interested in your progress!
I'm glad to hear your nail is almost clear! It's hard to believe that just yogurt and kefir seem to be helping. I can't remember exactly where I read it, but I recalled that probiotics help clear the body of fungal infections. One suggestion was to drink kefir due to the large number of probiotics in an 8 oz serving. That was when I thought to do a search on kefir and tonenail fungus to see what I'd find.

I'm actually using the vinegar, as I mentioned, but only 2 drops on each nail--not soaking as I had done before. I decided to start with kefir and yogurt as an addition to a heathy diet. The nails started clearing before the kefir, but I figured it couldn't hurt. I am seeing results!

The most difficult part of this process is finding out what works for you. It seems everyone swears by one remedy or another, but all fungal infections are different. I know a lot of people who have gone the drug route only to become reinfected--that, coupled with potential liver damage sent me to the web in search of a natural cure.

I'll keep you posted.

Just a follow up: My toenails are growing in pink and look healthy. I put two drops of vinegar morning and night and have been drinking 8 oz. of kefir a day. I don't know whether it's the vinegar or kefir, but it's working! One nail is 2/3 clear, the other is a little less. I have been applying the vinegar to all my nails and have noticed that the white tips are turning whiter, especially on the unaffected nails. Apparently the vinegar is changing the ph of the nails, which is what I have read. I'm leaving for the bahamas next week, but will NOT be polishing my nails. Oh well.... Slip on sandals for me!
Since iv'e been using the vinegar on my toenail it has turned my whole nail yellow. Are you supposed to use the distilled vinegar or the apple cidar?

So, give me an update. How are your nails looking? I hope you had a great trip!
:)
Nighthawk: Using vinegar and tea tree oil together are not a good idea. A very experienced poster named Marti on this board said that it is bad to use vinegar if you do not have an active fungal infection. (it turned my nails white). My only suggestion would be stop the vinegar and use the tea tree oil.

I take Kefir and yogurt daily, and wow my nails grow alot faster. (it also wiped out my fungal infection, I got my nail clipping results today and they were good). Add a bowl of jello regular or sugar free to your diet and that will really get those tonails growing.

My poditrist said to used tea tree oil to thin the nails and help them look better.

I am still looking for the secret to making ugly nails with no more fungus look good again. If I find the answer I will be happy to share the information!
