So hears the deal...last summer I was getting a pedicure and I had noticed that the second toe from the outside on both feet looked like it had started to grow out normally from the base then about 1/4 the way up the toe it raised up. I hadn't thought much about it, but then the lady doing my pedicure noticed that the top part of the toenail was actually peeling away from the bottom half of the toenail. It left what seemed to be a thin layer of nail on the toe bed, and only about 1/2 of the nail actually came off. I had just had a baby 6mos previous so thought maybe it had something to do with pregnancy hormones and hoped it would grow out.

Fast forward to this summer and the nail had grown out, but it did the same thing again. Plus I seem to have a horizontal ridge that goes across the toe. I asked my GP about it and she said she didn't know what caused it, but it wasn't fungus or bacteria or anything like that.

Is there any way to keep this from happening? I don't usually get pedicures, just maybe twice a year and I've pretty much been in flip flops all summer. Plus since it's on both toes I don't think it's because of any sort of trauma to the toe. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Lynn
It could very well be a raised 'rail' from the nail bed that is cutting through the nail plate. This can be due to a dried out nail plate, fungal or yeast infection or many other things. I would check with your podiatrist.
