Black under the nail can be a bruise or a fungal infection. If fungal, nail will usually be thick, ridged or bumpy and sometimes have lots of debris underneath. I would leave the artificial nail off, keep toes dry, trim off any length as it grows, and use of the antifungal is fine. Some infections if extensive require systemic antifungal meds to clear up. They are expensive and have to be taken for months while the nail grows out. Hopefully, it will clear up without that. Be sure to trim that nail last and then wash your clipper or scissors so you don't transfer the fungus to another nail.
