Lately I have been experiencing a lot of muscle twitching. It happens at any time of the day. I usually notice it more when resting or standing still. I feel the muscle twitching all over my body. I even feel it in some really weird places like the bottom of my feet or even my butt. It only lasts a few seconds and isn't painful, although it is really annoying. I usually notice more than 24 twitches a day. It's probably more, itís hard to tell.

I have also been experiencing jerking of my arms and legs. This only occurs when I'm resting. I have notice an increase in the jerking of the limbs. I feel terrible because I feel as if I have no control over these jerks. I am thankful though that it only happens when I'm resting. :)

I have noticed an increase in the twitching and jerking. I'm wondering what is causing it and if it is something I should be worried about. I have already looked into the medications I'm taking and none of them have muscle twitching or jerking as a side effect. I'm without insurance right now and would like some advice from anyone who may know what this may be caused by. I feel as if this is abnormal. I have asked around to find out if this is normal. I do understand that some muscle twitching is normal (like in the eyes, etc). But what I'm experiencing is a lot and canít possibly be normal.

I also have other symptoms that could be or not be related. I have also been experiencing dizziness and fatigue. I get dizzy from standing up from a sitting or laying down position. I also feel really tired and irritable by 2-3pm. I get plenty of sleep (more than 8 hours), so I know this isn't causing my fatigue. I have also been experiencing chest pain. This has been an issue for some time now. I thought it was due to stress and/or anxiety. I'm on medications to help with my anxiety so the chest pain can't possibly be anxiety related. I do believe I have arrhythmias. I have seen a cardiologist in the past concerning my chest pain. They concluded that it was anxiety related and to continue taking and/or increasing my meds (which Iíve done both). Like I said, I don't know if these other symptoms have anything to do with my muscle twitching or jerking.

I appreciate any advice or any information anyone could give me. I hope to figure out the cause and get this under control. Thank you!!! ;)
Hello everyone!

I wanted to update everyone on my muscle twitches & muscle jerks. I have to say that I'm experiencing way more than a dozen muscle twitches a day. I have been paying more attention to them and have to say I experience hundreds a day. Sometimes when I am really busy it's hard to notice them at all. The twitching and jerking are not painful, but rather annoying. I know that some muscle twitching is normal (like in the eyelids, etc). But, to experience hundreds in a day and have muscle jerking as well isn't normal.

I first thought it could be due to some medications I'm taking. I looked into all of the medications that I am taking and only one could cause muscle twitching. I'm taking an antidepressant for my major depression. This antidepressant is called: Cymbalta. Cymbalta as well as any antidepressant can cause your blood sodium to drop, which is called hyponatremia. When your blood sodium drops it can cause muscle twitching. I'm going to switch to Buspar on my next appointment to rule out this completely. I then thought it could be an electrolyte imbalance such as: potassium, calcium, etc. But, then I got my chem. 24 blood work back and it was normal. This test ruled any possibility that my electrolytes could be the culprit. My sodium and all of my other electrolytes are fine.

So now I'm back to the drawing board! I don't have any medical insurance, so seeing a specialist and getting more testing done would be very costly. I'm looking into some private insurance companies such as: Assurant. Hopefully, I'll have some sort of health insurance within a few months. I would like to see a neurologist and get an MRI or an MRA to rule out any problems neurologically. I suffered from a skull fracture as a child at 1 1/2 years old. I recently in the last 4 years had my first CAT-SCAN on my brain. This came back normal. An MRI and a MRA tests look at things that a CAT-SCAN doesnít. The only reason I'm looking into things are for two reasons. One being that having hundreds of muscle twitches and jerks a day isnít normal. Two being that I have neurological disease in my family. My mother has both Multiple Sclerosis and Epilepsy. I do have some symptoms of MS, but it could also be symptoms from something else. Iím only 23, will be 24 in May. Iím really young to have major health issues, but this doesnít rule me out. Anything can happen at any age! Iím hoping it isnít something major. The MS in our family goes back quite far. But it also skips a generation. This isnít always the cause even though the pattern reflects it. I donít want MS by all means. My mother was diagnosed at 36. She is now 46 years old. She is paralyzed in her right leg and depends on a wheel chair/scooter for means of transportation. Sad, I know! I feel as if she had been cheated out of life and my sisters and brother were cheated out of a mom who couldn't walk. Things were really rough growing up. My mom having MS, I believe has a direct roll on my depression, although there is also Bipolar in our family as well.

I think it is very important to listen to your body, but not obsess over it. It might just save your life!!!

Take care everyone!

Angel
Hello, lately I've been experiencing this as well. No MS or anything like that runs in my family. I'm getting twitches in my left calf. Usually at the same time every night and some chest tightness like on my left side but no heart attack related symptoms, kind of feels like it's bruised in one spot. I get these twitches in my chest sometimes. It comes and goes. I've gone to the doctor and had blood work done and an ekg everything has come out good. I am not on any medication, somewhat skinny as well. I also feel bloated sometimes like I just ate a big meal and short breaths. Think I'm ok?

What can be done and what can I do?
Thanks!
I'm glad i found this thread.

I've posted a thread similar to this, but at first I thought it was a problem with my veins. I went to the doctor and he said it sounds more like muscle twitching. Here is my original post:

http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=380203

I had blood work done yesterday so I am just awaiting the results.

However, someone made an earlier post about magnesium levels. Would it do any harm for me to try to start taking suppliments? As long as it wont harm me I would like to try this. I am not on any medications whatsoever, and never have been really.

My "twitches" seem to be more frequent in the arm (bicep, shoulder), neck, thigh, and calf. I also get the dizziness and have problems sleeping as when i close my eyes and lay down i get really dizzy and my head feels fuzzy.

if anyone else can shed some like on this it would be appreciated.

Regards,
my twitching is very small. like not entire muscles, just certain areas. almost like a pulse. not your average twitch. I have had muscle twitches in the past when i played lots of sports, but itw as the whole muscle, not like what I have now. thats why i thought it was a vein doing the pulse.

Hey,

I seem to be in a very similar situation to you.. I'm 17 now but have had the muscle twitching for years in varying degrees of intensity. The first one started in my left leg when i was around 9ish.. i remember being really worried about it but my parents just ignored it. That lasted for months before disappearing.. but it then came back maybe a year or two later. A while after that it spread to my right leg.. and eventually spreading to my neck, my face, my little fingers and my little toe.

Ever since then it's come and gone in phases.. i last had it around 18months ago but it started to come back mid-August again. My twitches seem to be far more frequent than yours though.. maybe 3-10 a minute depending on time of day/what I'm doing?

What's strange is that it completely disappeared last Friday when I was meeting up with a friend I hadnt seen in a year.. but it came back that evening when I went home. Probably an immature thing to say on this board but it might be worth noting that I had a huge 'crush' on her in the past. Is that a good sign?

Anyway, i also get those random spells of dizzyness when standing up.. they only last for a few seconds but I can't see/do anything while it's happening. I've also had periods (maybe a few days, a week?) where I've been noticeably unable to take anything on board.. and I'm known to look tired in lessons even when I've had plenty of sleep the previous nights. I'm also thin.. (BMIs under 17?) but I'm not unexpectedly weak as a result..?

I was at the doctor on Monday because I've had a stomach virus for the last week or so... He said wait until the virus goes and see what they're like then despite repeatedly saying I've had the twitches like this for years.

Woah, sorry to rabbit on so much but I'd really love to know anything I can do to sort this out/reduce the affects of it too.

I'm not sure if you'll still be on here as it's been a few years since your last post, I hope you are well... I just wanted to let you know that your twitches sound almost exactly like what I have, including the butt and foot twitches. Although I'd like to add that my leg and arm twitches seem to be connected, i.e. my right leg jerks, then it seems to travel through me to my right arm and it jerks too. It started off as little jerks that weren't very noticeable, now they are getting pretty violent.

As far as your other symptoms go, I have Arnold Chiari Malformation type 1, which can cause similar symptoms to MS and is often misdiagnosed as MS, it can be identified by having an MRI, although is often overlooked as it's not very well understood in the medical community. It's possible that this could be the cause of your symptoms, especially the headaches at the back of your head.

If you've been diagnosed with something for your twitches, I'd be interested to know what is causing your twitches as it may be the same thing that's causing mine. I'm not so sure it's caused by the Arnold Chiari Malformation.
AngelOfLight82,

I have similar symptoms as you are having. I am having left foot and leg (mostly foot) twitches. But the funny thing is, it is preceded by a sharp, painful chest pain! And this chest pain happens after sitting down on a chair for a while. I also have a burning pain in my left butt when I sit down on a chair. So the chain of events is

1. sit down for a long time
2. left butt pain
2. left chest pain
3. left foot twitch

I saw a doctor thinking I have a leg blood clot clot travelling to my heart. The doctor dismissed it since I am only 34 and have been feeling like this for a few years now. He said a blood clot would have killed me long time ago! I took MRI on lower back and a minor nerve pinching was uncovered and I went through physical theraphy to relieve my butt pain, which was supposedly caused by the nerve pinch. Well the theraphy improved my butt pain so maybe it was really a nerve pinching and/or the inflammation of the upper hamstring. But the onset of the chest pain followed by the foot twitch never went away. In fact I don't necessarily have to feel the chest pain first to feel the twitch - sometimes the foot twitches out of nowhere.

Sometimes my toes would feel numb and this is scary, but not as scary as my sudden sharp left chest pain. I almost feel like heart vessel is gonna rupture or something, but it could be my left rip cage/lung, I don't know.. I had taken a ECG, ultrasound, a blood test and chest X-ray which turned up nothing. I am not on any medication that would give me these symptoms. I doubt all these are stress-related either.

I'm frustrated like you are. Should you have any updates in the future, please post here as I'm gonna subscribe to this thread and see if anything could shed light on my issues.
hi every one. I've been dealing with these muscle twitches for about a year now. These muscle twitches happen all over my body, even in my left ear which is having a thumping feeling even as I post this. This is rather annoying and I really don't like this muscle twitching in my, but I glad to see other people dealing with muscle twitches. I do want ask, however has anybody delt with the muscle twitching in the ear?
Angel of light, have you ever figured out what you have going on with your muscle twitches and shooting pains? I would love to know. I have had the same problem since last august. Here it is April of 2008. I am finally seeing a neurologist on May 7th. I am scared of course. Scared of the unknown. No one is my family has MS, Parkinsons or anything like that. Neithor did they have hypothyroidism and I came down with that two years ago. I have had my blood tested for everything. Its all coming back normal. Thank God! But it still leaves me with no anwer, no diagnoses. I am so frustrated and the twitches are so annoying, expecially at night. No one around home can relate to this because no one has had it happen. I don't know where to turn. I try not to panic. I am 43 and feel like I am still young to fall completely apart. Just know you aren't alone. I am beginning to wonder if the guy talking about the antibiotics might be right. I have taken tons of those for sinus infections. I wonder if this is a delayed reaction of a poisen in my body?? I believe it can be true. The docs won't tell you that though, that is for sure.
Keep me posted please!

It's been awhile since I've visited this site. I'm reading all the last posts made since I was last here. I just got done reading yours & its interested that mentioned Chiari Malformation. My little sister was just diagnosed with Chiari Malformation type 1 last year. I'm sure I don't have it because I have already had an MRI and all is fine. However, I may has something similar to Chiari symptoms. My sister was also diagnosed with ehlers danlos syndrome (which is a connective tissue disorder) as well among other things. I do believe there is a possibility that I could have this condition, due to some symptoms matching. It is also hereditary like MS. I still don't have insurances, but as soon as I do, I'm gonna get everything ruled out.

I am interested in knowing if Chiari is hereditary. What are the chances that two sisters having the same rare condition??? I do know that it is often over looked on an MRI. My sister may not have even known if the doc didn't tell her. She hesitated when giving her the news, because she felt like it was a mild form, that it was nothing to worry about. I'm glad that she got a second look to confirm it.

I'll keep everyone posted as soon as I find out any information that is causing my problems. ;)

I have not found out anything yet, but when I do, everyone here will be first to know. ;)
It's good to hear I'm not alone in the symptoms. Though mine differ a bit.

I'm having varying degrees of twitching. Some days, it's constant, other days, I only notice the muscle twitching at night or when trying to rest. I also occasionally get this sharp, stabbing pain at the back of the upper/centerish side of my head. Occasionally I get these sort of "pulse points" random pulse sensations in various parts of my body. The most often impacted area is my right abdomen or my shoulders. These symptoms make noooo sense to me and my doctor is telling me it's stress, which, I can't rule out, for life has been ridiculously stressful as of late. Plus, I'm a webMDer and I've already diagnosed myself with MS and that really doesn't help my hypochondriac self. It just stresses me out more, which if that's part of the root of these twitches, just messes me up. Also, rarely, but it does happen on occasion, the right and left side of my head kind of...numb up. It really makes no sense whatsoever to me.

And lemme just say, butt twitches? Whattheheck. This is ridiculous.

i have the same thing big time
it goes from the shoulder either left or right then in the legs
never in 2 areas at once
its skips from one area to the other
it is a violent quick jerk then its over for a second or more
it lasts some times for a few minutes to a few days

so this is my advice first when the jerking starts get up and walk around do not lay down it only gets worse
also try some thing that a ms doctor will say don't, take a SHORT hot bath or hot shower then get under the covers in the bed this also seems to help

also one other thing that helps if you have a wife or husband have then scratch your head back and shoulders it seems to also help

last but not least this should actually be first your spouse is needed for this its love time
this seems to stimulate the brain and side track the electrical impulses in the brain that are causing the jerking in the first place
I have a similar problem(I think). I sometimes sit down and all of a sudden I get these little twitches in my legs. Its nothing painful but just annoying. It also freaks me out a little bit of why it happens. So if anyone could tell me whats wrong or just give a little support, I would appreciate it greatly.
