Re: Drying up milk
Sep 7, 2005
I'm 11 weeks postpartum, and am still producing a lot of milk, but I am not breastfeeding. It's pretty painful at times. But when your milk comes in at the very beginning, about 3-5 days after birth, there isn't really much you can do for it. Just keep your breast's tightly bound 24 hours a day, and don't express the milk...you body will then think it needs to make more. And the cabbage in the bra thing that the last poster just mentioned really helps with the pain!!! But I asked the nurse practitioner that works at my ob's office about why I am still producing milk 11 weeks later, she told me that it's normal, and can sometimes last 6 months. Now mind you, she has some strange idea's at times, and said that you can't get medication to dry it up anymore either. I plan on talking to my ob though, she isn't as flakey as the n.p.
