I was hoping someone could offer some insight on this problem regarding my girlfriend because I have no idea what it is.
It's been going on for about a year and only happens when she hasn't been getting enough sleep. She will shake me awake in the middle of the night freaking out demanding I turn my lamp on because either she thinks something is in the room or something tickled her.(one time she was just thirsty and wanted some water). Sometimes what she says makes no sense and after about a minute she just becomes confused and goes back to sleep. When I ask her about it the next day she rarely remembers it.
I was mostly unconcerned about it until last night when she leaped out of bed and switched the light on herself saying over and over that something had tickled her. After about a minute I was able to talk her down, she came to her senses, went to use the bathroom, got back in to bed and fell asleep immediately. Which is more than I can say for myself.
I'm worried that if this continues she's going to end up hurting herself.
Anyone have any idea what this is??

My girlfriend had the same problem! While falling asleep she was shaking. Then she was rapidly waking up - scared and confused, she thought someone was in the room, or she was thirsty or she had a scary vision. She also had insomnia.
It lasted years and years. Until I took her to neurologist. It turned out she had brain injury when she falled from horse when she was little. She got some pills. And now it's much better. No insomnia. No sleep paralysis. No shaking.

Your girlfriend probalby has hypnagogic hallucination or myoclonic seizures.

Also meditation and music is helpfull - it calms and relaxed before sleep ;)
