1. He consults his doctor for a prescription sleep med for a short time, to help him rebuild a normal sleep pattern

... My boyfriend has horrible insomnia. Pretty much he can't get to sleep until he's so tired he can't function properly.
He's tried taking melatonin, and it will work -- for a night or two. Around the third night, he'll get to sleep but then wake up half an hour later, wide awake, and won't be able to get back to sleep for the rest of the night.
