Hello everyone this is my first post here and I must say I am so very glad to meet all of you. Since as far back as I can remember I have had a goiter sticking out of my neck and the whirlwind of symptoms that went with it. I am 41 years old now and things have progressed very quickly to the point that they want to take it out. I am so scared of all the "what if's" that could happen. Loosing your voice or quality of voice after surgery. My surgeon who removed my gallbladder in January 07 and who I trust completely said he would have to cut across my whole neck and I would have a drain.. My biggest nodule was measured today at my pre-op at 9cm. She says that everything is just one big mass. This inspires no confidence in me that this will be an easy surgery. :(

What I am wondering if you would please be so kind to share your story is for those who had huge goiters removed and had a huge incision across the neck, how it went for you. Were you in alot of pain upon waking up from surgery? How did your recovery go? Were you able to eat? Sleep? Lay down to sleep? What helped you to sleep? A special pillow? Alot of swelling? Vocal cords okay? And how does your scar look today? Did you have any bodily reactions from not getting enough calcium?

I know without a doubt that the time is here for mine to come out as it has caused me to gag while eating, sleep apnea once, constant inflamation of my neck/fullness that I put ice on everynight just to get some relief. Pressure on my neck, feeling of not being able to breathe, tightness.

Thank you so much and I hope all of you are feeling better from having it removed!
