TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint Board Index

Unfortunately, I think "successful" surgery in the case of TMJ dysfunction and pain is a relative term. Often, the surgery only reduces pain and dysfunction and/or buys time until a more extensive surgery is needed. But sometimes surgery truly is the last hope for relief and at least an improved quality of life, although not a cure. My 20-year-old daughter has had numerous surgeries since she was 14 including bilateral total joint replacement at age 17, and most recently removal of the left prosthetic fossa due to infection (scheduled to be replaced next month). Although recovery from the joint replacement surgery took the full 12 months that her surgeon said it might, my daughter's quality of life has been very, very much improved. Best wishes to all.
