TMJ and tinnitus
Dec 20, 2014
Around a month and a half ago I was eating a raw carrot (not the best idea) and my right jaw suddenly popped and now whenever I open my jaw it pops. The jaw popping feels as though it is just infront of my right ear. It aches too.

The jaw popping while annoying was not accompanied with any pain of any sort and the articles I looked at on the web said that with time often within a few weeks the jaw popping resolves itself so I decided to just forget about it.

Then last week I started hearing a ringing in my right ear (the same side as the jaw popping) and with a bit of investigation assumed it was TMJ since the two are very closely related.

The tinnitus is so loud it keeps me awake at night even if I play white noise. I have also tried various TMJ jaw excercises and aside from leaving me with the feeling my right jaw has been chewing gum for days there has been no noticeable improvement with the popping or tinnitus. If anything it exacerbates it. Ocassionally I also feel rather dizzy.

I can deal with the popping and the aching jaw but as soon as the tinnitus started it completely floored me. The noise reminds me of an encounter I had with a Mosquito alarm years ago. It's that loud.

I have booked an appointment with a GP but I'm looking for any treatment I can do in the meantime that might mitigate the tinnitus.

Thanks in advance.
