I'm 20 years old, and I suspect I have TMJ. My jaws click, and the left joint feels sandy/gritty very frequently. I don't have much pain, though, but my jaws can sometimes open slowly. ... If you were still in pain with your guard, did you let your dentist know this? They would have made adjustments or maybe try a different guard. If you have TMJ, do NOT just yawn, catch yourself with your hand. I have learned to yawn with my mouth barely open.
