Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

GERD = Acid reflux on a regular basis, which is starting to damage your esophagus lining.

If it came on suddenly the first time and it was very strong, it probably means that you have a hiatal hernia.

If it came on slowly over the years, it probably means that your sphincter is not closing properly. The lower esophageal sphincter is a muscle and like all muscles, it losses its flexibility as one grows older. In time it ceases to close well enough to stop stomach juices from trickling back to the esophagus.

The best solution is a proper diet as well as other changes in habit. If it gets worse, taking something like Maloox, Zantac or Prilosec for a couple of weeks may help, but do not get used to these things. They interfere with the proper function of the stomach and you will end up with other problems due to poor nutrition regardless of what you eat.

Continuous problems with this can lead to Barret's Esophagus, which can lead to cancer. If it is not too late, radically change your life style right now.
