Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

I have been diagnosed with intermittent reflux after numerous endoscopies and barium x rays however I've been badly affected every day for over two years and I believe I have LPR and a post nasal drip.

My symptoms are:

Difficulty swallowing food all the time, sometimes swallowing saliva is difficult
Constant burping
Throat clearing
Excess mucous on right side of throat/chest
Constant stream of mucous on right side trickling feeling or feeling like right lung is blocked
Tight throat
Constant awareness of uncomfortable feeling in throat
Waking up choking on phlegm suddenly in trachea which causes asthma type wheeze and sheer panic
Lump in throat
Sometimes a little heartburn
Breathing difficult or feels harder
Blocked sinuses
Tight stomach

Does anyone else get this? I am taking two 150mg effervescent ranitidine a day because omprezole and lansoprazole didn't help. I am also starting a steroid nasal spray.

Any advice would be great thank you. I'm a 32 year old female and feel like I'm constantly ill I can't enjoy life. I can't sleep very well because my throat is so uncomfortable the phlegm chokes me and I'm scared of waking up choking.

Yes, I have had many of those symptoms and have found an explanation and some relief.

What you can do to get better:

1. Buy a wedge pillow or raise the head of your bed by 8". Propping up regular pillows won't work because you're trying to raise your esophagus above your stomach and that means your head and shoulders need to be in a straight line. Also don't sleep on your right side because that raises the stomach above the esophagus and can promote reflux.

2. Don't eat or drink anything within 2-3 hours of going to bed. 7:00 is my cutoff time - I pay if I break it!

3. Avoid activity, bending over especially for an hour or so after you eat. In general avoid prolonged bending - anything that could allow reflux to get up into your throat, lungs, or head. When that happens your body starts an inflammatory response to create mucus to protect those tissues.

4. Buy some high PH water and sip it throughout the day. Anything with PH 8 up is good because it inactivates pepsin. Sip it because too much liquid can make you more prone to reflux, but you want just enough water to coat the throat and esophagus. Avoid drinking anything acid like most every drink sold out there these days.
