Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

I have GERD but also other symptoms:
For about 4 months a noticed I would get more and more bloated after smaller and smaller meals. Feeling bloating, pressure and fullness right under my ribcage.
Then it got worse and I started to feel actual GERD symptoms, like burning, prickling, fullness in my throat after a meal, worse when lying down. Just like the Nexium commercial, like you have swallowed metal thumbtacks.
Then, it got so I could barely eat anything without more bloating and burning. "Bloat, Burn and Fart" I would call it. It would take about 4 hours to feel normal again.
Then the bloating got so bad that it triggered off a Vasovagal attack: viscious, terrifying spasms that felt like my heart was doing flip flops in my chest, skipping beats, or feeling like a water balloon shaking flopping in my chest. It would go on for hours, often waking me up. I would lay on the floor and shake and spasm, convinced I would die any moment.
I went to the ER: Reflux with esophogeal spasm. Heart checked out fine. Went on Prilosec. No more attacks, BUT....
I still can't eat: I have been living on Ensure and crackers of two weeks now, and have lost 7 pounds. If I even eat 4 spoonfulls of vegeatable soup or the like, I get hard bloating....like my intestines have stopped working. Like they are paralysed. I have to take enemas, massage my abdomen, etc, to try to clear out my gut.
Don't most people on Prilosec or the like just keep on eating a normal amount?
Any ideas out there???? Thanks!!
Pindy,
What kind of tests have you had run? I did exactly what you are doing and it turned out that I had Gerd and IBS. Once the symptoms of IBS constipation were being treated, the reflux and spasms stopped. I now take Nexium and Miralax every day. I wont waste your time spelling out my symptoms since they look exactly like yours. I would however suggest that you go to see a gastro doctor. I could not eat normal amounts of anything on Nexium alone. No enemas or laxatives were cleaning my colon the way the perscription medication has done. Do you find fibers hard to digest? Does it feel like you are still digesting food, or refluxing it hours after you have eaten? Do the spasms start within 15 min to half hour after you eat? Do you feel a little relief with the enema as far as spasms or reflux? It really sounds like you are dealing with more that one thing here. Let me know how it goes and good luck.
Vic
please what does GERD mean
GERD: gastro esophogeal reflux disease
Thanks for replying...it really helps to hear from others; the doctors and the medical sites just don't have the detailed descriptions and information that are vital to finding out what the heck is going on!
When things were bad, I would bloat within minutes of eating even small amounts: 15 to 30 minutes could be the start of an attack, if I couldn't get it under control. antacids, Ativan, certain positions on the floor, tylenol, whatever.
Yes, several times now when the bloating would start in bad, several small enemas in a row would give about 40% relief and prevent a major attack.
The feeling of bloating is way down now that I have been on Prilosec for a week. Perhaps some of the feeling is related to the raw, burned tissue, or perhaps another aspect of the vagus nerve hypersensitivity.
One thing I just found helpful is that I was very dehydrated. I found Postum, Molasses and a little cream go down easily. I drank 3 in a row and started to feel better. It makes sense: the bowel contents will seize up if there is not enough liquid to move the stuff along.
I am not familiar with IBS; I'll look it up. Sounds nasty.
Thanks again for the info.
Hi Pindy,

You're not alone with your symptoms. You are describing the past 3 weeks that I've had. It's been a nightmare! So far, I've been diagnosed with inflamed bowels and gastritis; however, I'm still waiting for my biopsy report. My chest spasms have curbed in the last week and a half. But I know what you mean when you think you're about to die when you have that sensation. I didn't know that I was having chest spasms until my doctor told me. A couple of times, the bloating and pressure had gotten so bad in my stomach that I thought my stomach was going to burst!

In the last couple of weeks, I've been on Aciphex and I've been taking Phazyme for the boating. As far as eating goes, I've been eating very small meals (big lifestyle change for me). I've been drinking plenty of water, apple juice and grapefruit juice. My appetite has increased somewhat and I'm not as bloated as before.
I've been diagnosed with GERD years ago, taking zantac off and on, but my problem now and has been for almost 3 yrs.! First started having spasms in and all over my stomach like I was pregnant. Crazy cause I wasn't ofcourse. Can't get pregnant no more. Anyways, over this past year, although the spasms in my stomach have never stopped, my back has been hurting so bad I can hardly move somtimes. I have nauseau and burning, burping and gas alot. I feel sick all the time! I don't know what in the world is wrong with me now, but I haven't seen a doc for this and it is waking me up at night and I just feel sick to my stomach, have thrown up and have bouts of diarehea alot! I need some input.....pleaz.......
Ravyn,

What does your diet intake consist of?
Your gerd could be getting worse,or you could be having gall bladder symptoms.Or you could have gerd and ibs.Sometimes they go hand in hand.I have both plus other symptoms. When i have a bad gerd attack the pain goes to my back into my shoulder blade, and then disappears couple hrs later.Take care.

I can't imagine that grapefruit juice is helping your gastritis. It's very acidic.
:jester: Hello iam also having trouble with what you guys call the shacking ,feeling in my chest.. But , I do notice that its only when i lay down to go to sleep.. As for the bloating feeling well i always carry that around it feels like all the time.. Some days i cant see my face and belly get so swallon and puffy looking i think iam on my ( period).. but its not time...Also i use to be on prilocec and it did help with the acid some what but never for the blaoting and gas.. iam wondering if they make a twoin one pill for both.. for iam one who hates to take alot of pills.... At first i thought i was having a heart attack are a panick attack.. but your right its just more of a vibrated ,are shacking feeling..... iam over weight , and trying to do stuff about that as we speak.. but this bloating is really getting on my last nerve...so . no we are not alone .. and it always is more helpfull talking to you guys rather than the doctor somtimes cause my doctor is alwasy like humm. ive never herd of that..lol....i will keep you guys updated with it all...

take care!! candykanesc!
So does the heart palp thing go along with the GERD and IBS combo? I've posted a message here AND on the IBS forum but haven't gotten any replies. I get right handed chest pain with burning, heart palps (cradio says heart is fine) and then I get the D.
This is my first reply on here...but I am just amazed at what I am reading. I have known for years now that I have GERD and hiatal hernia. I also have had episodes of ulcerative colitis and IBS. But I never (nor apparantly did the doctors) really associated all the PVC's and heart arrhythmias with the reflux problem until now. I do have lots of reflux lately, and lots of PVC's again. (I have mitral valve prolaspe, but nothing else structurally wrong with heart) I have problems with many medications so I treat it only with diet and Tums, etc. I read somewhere that apple cider vinegar is an effective treatment for these symptoms. Has anyone tried that?? I do remember that as a child my grandmother gave us vinegar and a touch of baking soda to drink for upset stomach. I thought she was rather old fashioned...but maybe she was just smart after all. I am also diabetic on diet and exercise...but that is another story. Thanks for any input...and have a great day!
I have the same thing, someone told me that the correlation is because of the vegus nerve as far as GERD and Hiatal causing PVC's or palpitations they said that it may be aggrevating that nerve causing the palps. Not sure if they were a doctor or not but I have heard this before. DOn't think it has been proven though.
Vic, how was your IBS constipated treated
THe spasms, I just had another one tonight, I am not diagnosed with anything (yet) my doctor said to just take some ranitidine and not drink coffee or sodas. Tonight I drank a beer and ate a good meal, and bwallloop, a feeling of a water balloon flopping in my chest. Panic set in, and I got sweaty and dragged myself to the bathroom where I calmed down, pain went away, it lasted for only a few seconds. But boy is that scary, I am sooo glad to read this board and know I'm not alone. A lot of good advice here and I need to make lifestyle changes, that I know now. I don't have symptomps as bad as some of you describe, but the burping, gas and bloated feeling, I've had that for a long time, and just took it as part of life. Now I know better! Thank you everyone here.
This thread has been really great. As I read everyone's postings I can relate with a lot of it. I have so many of these symptoms but have never put them all together. I've been on Nexium for over a year. I started taking it when I was having gallbladder problems and then had my gallbladder removed. I switched to Protonix two weeks ago and in the last three days I've had my first of three really horrible GERD attacks. I serioulsy thought I was going to have a heart attack. I called my husband at work and asked him to come home. I was really thinking about going to the ER. It finally subsided by the time he got home and I went to the doctor and she told me is was most likely reflux. I didn't really believe her. I just didn't she really understood just how much pain I was having in my back and shoulder blades. That is until I got on here and started reading everyone's stories. I'm switching back to Nexium immediately!! This board is so great and I thank everyone for posting their stories and their helpful advice. I post on several of the boards here. The IBS board. Which I just read in this thread that goes hand in hand with GERD, didn't know that. thyroid board, weight loss, and now this one. anyway, thanks :)
I have all the symptoms you do too - I've had reflux since I was 26 and now I'm 40. I have been on ppis (Prilosec and Nexium) on and off for years. The Nexium is stronger and seems to help with the symptoms - which are much worse for me in the morning. (Nausea, lack of appetite, stomach discomfort).

I am going in for my second endoscopy in 5 years just to make sure nothing has changed. You should definitely make an appointment to see a gastro doc. Some of your symptoms sound like gastroparesis - which is essentially delayed stomach emptying. (Go to Wikepedia's site for good info on this topic)

I also suffer from frequent heart rhythm changes (my heart is normal), and I think its most likely related to the vagus nerve. I frequently get a stomach "jump" just before a bout of palpitations. When I see the gastro doc next week, I'm going to ask him about testing the vagus nerve to see if its functioning properly. (It controls everything from heart rhythm, to breathing to digestive processes and a lot more) If its overactive or underactive in any way, it can contribute significantly to some of the problems we seem to have.

Hope you feel better soon.

I just wanted to add regarding the apple cidar vinegar to be very careful and be sure to dilute it first with water and maybe some honey. I have been taking it and drinking it straight!! a big no no. My throat has been on fire for about a week and I attribute it to the vinegar. I'm going to the doctor later today to get some feedback about my new and ongoing symptoms.
I also have problems with medication and had terrible side effects with PPIs so am trying to let my body heal with natural things.
I also have heart things: rapid rate after eating, especially icecream:rolleyes: !!
at night irregular beats will wake me. This whole thing just keeps you on the verge of insanity.
I try to just live each day and pray for more good days than bad and am thankful for these boards to vent and get and give info.
best to everyone:wave:
Hi guys. Try a teaspoon of heney before you go to bed. It seems to help the throat and LES valve heal faster.
Anyone who has muscle pain may want to check the threads on fibromyalgia. Those of us with FMS quite often also have GURD and IBS. My stomach is so bloated all the time that I have a hard time finding slacks, skirts etc. that will fit over the stomach. The rest of me is not that large, just my stomach. I can't get any doctors to treat it or give me help with it. The always kind of ignore my request and focus on something else.:)
look up the candida diet. excellent for relflux too. i almost feel normal since the diet, while 2 nexium a day with the strict reflux no no's didnt work..no sugar, no yeast, no gluten. basically meats and vegetables. worked wonders for me

Wow, I am certainly amazed by what I am reading from all of you!
I sincerely feel for each and ever one of you too. This is living hell!!!

I'm a 36 yr old woman. Healthy and functional with the exception of what I thought was common allergies and (adult on-set) asthma - both of which I was taking medication for, Zyrtec for allergies and Singular for Asthma.

Early in 2006, I started a new job where there are 1000's of people working there. Shortly thereafter, I started to feel ill and visited my doctor who diagnosed me with Mononucleosis (This is the second time with Mono!?!). My spleen was swollen and I felt horrid. Could barely eat and I developed acid reflux. I was told to take Maalox or Zantac - which I have been doing for the past several months on/off.

I visited a nutritionist who advised I watch my diet and pay attention to which foods irritate me and give me acid reflux. I did this and found that I just couldn't eat at night anymore. So when I got home from work - it was strictly water and some string cheese or jello with whip cream / a very light snack for dinner. I found this avoiding meals helped but it would not help all the time. I tried to maintain my water intake at 6-8 glasses of water a day (2 liters).

About 2+ weeks ago, the acid reflux started to get very intense at night and the maalox and zantac stopped working. I started getting shakes in my legs and chills that were accompanied by sharp stabbing and burning pain in my left side under my bottom rib. The pain was nagging and constant and would not go away - all day! The second evening this happened, I called my primary care physician who had me take Omeprazole 20mg (generic prilosec) twice a day. The Omeprazole helped during the day, but the third evening the pain I felt was so horrid and intense! I visited the ER where they checked my heart and told me it was gastritis, dumped some maalox down my throat and sent me home. Advised me to follow up with my doctor.

I've been tested for H. Pylori and that came back negative. This past week the pain moved to the right side accompanied by some belly swelling (I know where my stomach skin sits - the skin isn't sitting right - can feel it). More blood work was drawn. My blood work came back and my Pancreas Enzyme Amylase was slightly elevated (they thought I had gall stones or a problem with my gall bladder - especially since I do not consume alcohol) - so I was sent for a Cat Scan of my Pancreas, which was negative. An ultrasound of all my major organs was taken too and that all came back negative. In the meanwhile, I have been mindful to increase my fiber intake by eating a bran muffin and whole wheat products. Since I get full very easily - every bite counts towards not getting constipated or further imbalances from lack of nutrition!

A few days ago, I spoke to a pharmacist for some drug suggestions (I am desperate!) - she suggested I get a script for Sucralfate (generic Carafate) 1 gram 4 times a day. I called my doctor and got the script. It's like a liquid bandage for ulcers and prevents the stomach acid from attacking the lining. We're still guessing what is wrong with me! I took the Sucralfate and it made me feel so much better. After 2 weeks of being in pain - the pain went from on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the worst) went from 4 down to 2.

I'm on my second day of taking Sucralfate, Omeprazole and Maalox and my stomach has seriously shrunk. I take 3 fork fulls of food and I'm done. I've lost several pounds in the past 2+ weeks. This evening after I tried to eat a little bit more (I know I need nutrition), got nauseated and just tried to relax and hope my body would absorb what little I did eat. Shortly thereafter the shakes started up again and the pain is gnawing at my right side again, along with acid reflux.

I am taking my medications as prescribed on an empty stomach. Waiting an hour to eat after taking Sucralfate. Separating the Sucralfate and Omeprazole by no less than 2 hours and not taking Maalox within 2 hours before or after taking the Sucralfate.

I have another 3 days to go before I can see a gastro specialist (it feels like forever). I have been waiting 2+ weeks for an appointment, despite my pleas with the office of how seriously sick I am. I have been in the ER 2 times in the past 2+ weeks for the pain. My doctor did offer to give me Darvocet - but I declined because of the condition of my stomach and how hard Darvocet is on the stomach.

Now, why I mentioned the allergies and asthma earlier... with this experience I have been reading research papers about Prilosec and proton pump inhibitors and conditions that could be causing this hell. There have been findings that patients with (adult onset) Asthma that have been found to have GERD too!

Researchers already relate the allergies and sinus issues to asthma. Oddly, when I started the Omeprazole - I stopped taking my Zyrtec and Singular because of a sensation of dry sinus and lack of post nasal drip from my allergies. I have not taken my allergy or asthma medications in 2+ weeks now and I am fine. I will be amazed when they get to the bottom of this issue. If I can be medication free of the allergy and asthma medications - I will be overjoyed! It's amazing how many problems this GERD can cause!!

Thanks for letting me rant and your attention while reading my story!

I wish you all wellness and fast recovery!!

Chickie
this post has helped me to a great ammount. For weeks i havnt been able to eat more then three fork fulls of food at a time. i have been drinking just gatorade and water. i read this post and am following up to a gastro dotor. ive been going to doctors getting all sorts of tests. everything has come up negative its been to were i was also tested for mono. hopefully the gastro will help me and ill feel like i can swallow again with out this inflamed throat. if anyone has any advice for me please send it to me i need it badly.
Hi Chickie,

I really feel for you as I was in the same place you are this time last year. We are the same age and I also have asthma and allergies. I started off with acid reflux then it worsened to chest pain, couldn't eat, felt sick all the time palpatations etc etc.

It took me a few months to come right but am now really well. I stopped taking all the drugs the doctor kept dishing out - Omeprazole made me worse, asthma drugs included ( they can cause reflux) stopped drinking coffee, and avoided acidic foods. Ate as much fruit especially apples as I could, walked everyday and my body slowly healed. Also cut down or cut out processed food and bread and pasta also seems to make the acid reflux worse.

I did get a gastroscopy to check there wasn't anything wrong and since it was all clear I really took my health into my own hands and am glad I did.

I hope you can get to the bottom of it soon. Its so stressful not knowing whats wrong.
Ask your doctor about carafate. I took it in pill form for constant burning in the esophus, it didn't work. It was prescribed by the gastrologist. Stopped taking it. Went to my primary and he re-prescribed it for me, only this time he said to disolve it in 1 ounce of water and drink it. What a difference, the burning went away almost immediately. On my 4th day and it's great. Good luck.
Hey there, I have the exact same problems.Am on ppi for stomach ulcers/gerd.Heart pounds all the time and have awful sensations in neck and throat.same to be able to feel my pulse everywhere and just donfeel right.not to depress you but has been going on for nearly three years now and have had all the tests ,cameras, heart test including stress test and echo cariograph. Am going for an ablation in the next few months but have little faith that this will solve problem.I fyou have found any thing out could you please get back to me. Also experience that terrible shaking feeling.think it will eventually kill me. Have had no advice on dietfrom the many doctors i have seen. Have to avoid all nights out with friends and anything stressful as it makes all syptoms worse. Please anyone help!!
I have been diagnosed and undiagnosed with several things. I can't eat either, but for a different reason: food impaction was what started it. I also have been on ensure, but for almost 2 months now. I have the feeling of something stuck in my throat, hard to swallow, sometimes hard (or impossible) to breathe, various joint pain. I have a hiatal hernia for sure, but we don't know if this is causing the problem. After a scope I was diagnosed with possible gerd/ee. The biopsy for ee came back as maybe, then the after second thought, it was diagnosed as negative. I was put on flovent for that, which gave me thrush that I am still treating. I have been diagnosed with gerd, kind of, by my GI, but he disputes the diagnoses of lprd, by my ENT doctor. I just had a swallow test done and am scheduled for a manometry in a couple of weeks, which will hopefully give us more info. I have been on 2 different ppi's, neither of which seem to work for me, even at the 2x daily rate.
did you have your thyroid checked?
I have not had my thyroid checked, but I have had 2 endoscopes and one additional one through the nose. I have just also had a barium swallow and a manometry done. I am supposed to see the GI on Friday. I went in to have some dental work done and when I got put on the novacaine, I went into a panic attack, which lasted off and on for about 3 hours. I have had these since all this started. I have them when it feels like I have problems swallowing or breathing.

Is it possible that they could have missed a thyroid problem with all these tests? I am on my second ppi with no improvement. Still waiting to make some progress with this condition. I have been miserable for over 3 months and lost over 60 lbs. Still on a totally liquid diet, no help in sight. Any ideas?
why would rge thyroid cause breathing and swallowing problems.

The panic attack you experienced from the dental office was more than likely enduced by the novicane. Most Local Anethisea used in dental offices has epinephren in it. This is basiucally the same thing as getting one hell of a dose of adrenaline. Adrenaline and panic attacks go hand in hand. From some of the symptoms you are describing. I would go talk to your doctor and see what he/she can do to help with General Anxiety Disorder. I myself used to have many of the symptoms you described. I went through test after test and nobody could find anything. (that adds to the panicy and anxiety going to Dr's only to have them say we don't know.) I found a Dr that picked up on a couple of things when I was describing everything to him and he asked me if I was against trying anti anxiety/depressants. I said if you think it will help why not. I did lexapro for 90 days and had a generic of Xanax to help with the panic attacks. after about a month, almost all my stomach issues went away. I then followed up the medical treatment with behavoir therapy. (basically learning how to deal with anxiety and get over it.) There are people and places that can help. I was fortunate that there was a Dr in my area who specailized in Behavoir therapy. Dr Liebgold (he has many publications). I have been off my medication for over a year now and my stomach/inside issues are almost never around. I still have good and bad days, but nothing like it used to be. Seriously look into General Anxiety Disorder. The mind is very powerful over the body. My 2 cents. I am not a Dr. and not affiliated with dr liebgold other than being a patient who he was able to help. Another place you can check out as well is the midwestcenter (use ******)
Just thought I would let you know my sister just told me last night she has the same problem with the injection before dental work, here heart will race like crazy after the injection so they changed the type of injection they give her. Hope this helps
