Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

Hi there. Not sure if anyone on here can help me or not.

I am a 32 yo female. Have had these symptoms on and off for the last few years, but this year they are have incresed and presistent.

I have a feeling of thick sticky mucous in my throat that wont move up or down. When by a miracle I CAN get something up, it is clear, sticky, thick and gluelike. The abundance is cyclical througout the day- some times worse than others. Seems to be worse when I eat (anything) and also when I cry or yell.

I feel like I constantly have to clear my throat, which is unproductive. Sometimes it feels the mucous is sitting on my gag reflex and It gags me. Sometimes the sensation of the phlegm makes me so nervous because I fear it will block my esophogus and I cant get it up or down. I already drink 3 quarts of water a day and nothing works.

Also: I do NOT have any noteworthy nasal symptoms (955 of the time), no runny nose or congestion, no chest congestion and no cough. This all leads me to believe its not sinus related.

I have seen two ENT's now who scoped me and said "reflux". I was on Zantac which did nothing. Now I am on Protonix. I just finished Week 2. I thought the last couple of days were a little better (not phenomenal but some improvement). Then today I am right back to my worst ever!!

My questions:
-Has anyone else with this ever had these symptoms?
-What did you do?
-How long does the medicine take to work? Should I worry that its been 2 weeks?

I feel like i am losing my mind. Its affecting my quality of life. Any advice would be helpful. And some reassurance that the mucous wont block my esophogus? Thank you. Sometimes I just feel I cant go on like this.
I have had exactly the same symptoms. Last August I started with a cough which lasted until November. Since November I have had constant pflegm at the back of my throat that will not budge. It is very frustrating, and I can constantly feel it there. Drinking water does not help, in fact it seems to make it worse. Also my saliver is very thick. I have seen a pulminary specialist (for the original cough in particular)-- xrays, catscan. I went to an ENT in December -- he gave me Allegra & a nasal spray -- no help. I am going back to the ENT. I did find on the web that it might be an allergy -- apparently dust up the nose could cause the constant sinus condition -- if it is that. Also, the ENT said it was not reflux -- he put the scope thing up my nose and down my throat.

Let me know what you find out. I will go and see an ENT next week -- I will post here with results. Cheers.
