I agree with you 100%. I feel the same way. "Something" is just not working right. Period. What, I haven't figurered it out yet and no
Dr. has given me a reason that makes good sense. I don't have the gag thing too often (thank God) but like you, I took allergy shots for years and last testing was good. I'm not sure I reflux acid all the time because I don't have the burning feelng all the time. You can reflux non-acid material but "what" is the reason for this and "what" can be fixed to stop it. I do think something has to be done other than all the norm tips and suggestions. What might help one doesn't mean it will the next. Very frustrating and hope someone can give you some solid advice.

To KyleG:

Wow. I thought I was the only person in the world who had almost these exact symptoms. However, my gagging is grossly aggravated by anxiety. My gag reflex is active almost 24/7 and the only way I can stop it is to be chewing on, and swallowing small pieces of food (I usually use something small that I can take with me like almonds). Gum chewing only works for a second as something about the texture causes me to start gagging after a minute or two of chewing. Sucking on mints sometimes helps.

I have been to quite a few doctors as a child and found that I had moderate allergies to just about everything on the planet and lots of post nasal drip. However, the doctors haven't been able to come up with a treatment that has helped me. I have been dealing with this issue since I was in elementary school and I have found ways to cope (almonds, anti-anxiety meds), but they don't fix the problem, they just 'distract' my gag reflex temporarily.

About 2 years ago, I started getting the feeling of a 'lump' in my throat that worsened my symptoms so bad that some days the almonds couldn't distract my gag reflex enough so I began to gag and vomit uncontrollably (I'm sorry, I know that's gross). I went to the doctor and, after a nasal scope (THAT was a terrible experience for someone with a hyperactive gag reflex!!!), I was diagnosed with mild reflux. I do not get any of the 'typical' heartburn symptoms but my doctor said that many people can have reflux without heartburn.

Since then I have tried EVERY known remedy (drug/herb/etc.) to get rid of the reflux but it persists. I was put under and had a esophageal scope done, and everything appears to be physically fine! The specialist who performed the procedure said it was almost "all in my head" and related to my anxiety. He recommended going on some anti-anxiety meds and seeing a therapist (which I do now). I still have some odd feelings in my gut though, so I don't think it's all in my head.

For the last 3 weeks or so I have been on an anti-anxiety med, and my reflux doesn't seem to be as bad. I'm not sure if that's related or not. The gag reflex is just as bad as ever though. I'm pretty sure the reflux I am having is still irritating it and I'm dealing with some extra anxiety at the moment to compound on that.

I know anxiety may not factor in to your symptoms, but I would love to know if you find anything that gives you relief. I believe if I can get the physical side under better control, I won't be as anxious. I hope you check this thread even though it's over a month old. I rarely post things online, but I was encouraged to see that I wasn't the only one dealing with these issues. My life is dominated by my gag reflex / acid reflux right now and I'm sick of it! Any relief I can get at this point I consider a miracle.

I'm sorry to be long-winded and dump all of this here, but I put up with this 24/7/365 and I guess I just need to vent a bit, lol.

I hope you get some relief, and again, if you find anything that helps you I would love to know about it!

God Bless!
I just read all of this and thought i would share my story. I am 20 years old right now, Just before i turned 18 in the begining of my senior year i started to always feel sick, the "leaning over the toilet about to throw up feeling" no matter what i ate or drank. All day, it never went away. I have had severe acid reflux since i was born and was diagnosed with gerd as well as a faulty pyloric valve, the flap of skin the closes after food passes from your esophogus into your stomach.

Anyways it got to the point where i was throwing up 60 70 times a day, everything in my stomach was gone and i would uncontrollably dry heave for hours on end. I was unable to take a small bite of food or a sip of any drink, it would just come right back up. I went 9 days without eating anything more than a couple of popsicles that barely went down and i eventually puked back up.

My mom finally decided to take me to the emergency room, where they gave me Reglan, a prescription drug used to help stop severe vomiting. If any of you are familiar with Reglan you know it is not in the least bit a fun drug to be on. It attacks your nervous system and leaves you with an uncotrollable, on edge, total wacked out feeling. You get so anxious about nothing, you cant think yo yourself, it makes you jump out of your own skin. after one 10 mg pill you feel the effects quite a bit. I was taking 4 a day and was unable to drive and had blurred vision, and just a crazy messed with type of feeling.

The severe vomiting never went away, i went back to the hospital and had every stomach test known to man, fiberoptic scan, endoscopy, gerds testing, ct scans, MRI's, chest x-rays, gastric emptying test, radioactive bypass tests and who knows what else. All of them came up with no answerss as to why i was having such severe symptons that could not be stopped or slowed.

After the 1st month i dropped an amazing amount of weight, i went from 203 lbs to 137 in just over a month. I lost all energy, i could barely stay awake and walk around to just live life. Months went by before i found a book, a biography written by a college student with the same symptoms. After reading the first 5 pages in aw that someone else in the world had these problems and i wasnt alone i skipped directly to the back that gave the answer of how he solved his problems. He took a combination of omeprazole, reglan, and natural stomach supplements like acidofoulus.

I started on that same pill program and after about 3 more months i was back to gaining weight and eating food again. It took just about a year for my stomach to be back to as normal as possible.

Unfortunately i had to stop taking reglan due to severe parkinsins like symptoms and involuntary muscle movement, even paralysis that reglan can cause. My stomach has gone back to its old problem ways but not completely. I can still eat food but not alot and i am completely unable to go out partying and drinking. Out of no where all day i feel really nautious and gagged. My only way to fight it off is to chew gum, i did it when i first started getting problems and it helps to take my mind off my stomach.

Please post more stuff, are there any sure solutions to this problem??
