Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

LPR Thoughts
Feb 21, 2008
Hello everyone,

I've been viewing the posts on this board for several months now, but have just finally decided to begin contributing. I've been experiencing (what I have self-diagnosed to be) LPR for a little over a year now, and it has been quite a trip. It all started with the (all-to-common) feeling that something was stuck in my throat. I didn't think anything of it until one day, a few months later, I was looking on the internet and saw that this is a symptom of throat cancer. Well, much to my chagrin, the idea that I might have the big C troubled me (to say the least). As is common with many of us, I immediately assumed this to mean that I 110% had cancer and would be gone within the year. Needless to say, this did little to improve my symptoms.

I finally went to the doctor, who briefly dismissed this as "acid reflux" and gave me a prescription of Nexium to fix me. He didn't even listen to my cancer concerns. Nexium turned my one symptom into 10 symptoms, giving me terrible heartburn, cramping, and headaches. After a couple months of this I stopped taking my one-a-day purple pill and went back to the doctor.

My second doctor visit yielded more "helpful" results where I was told after a 2 minute consultation that I had allergies. I was prescribed some dumb allergy medication and was sent on my way. I once again expressed my concern about the big C, only to have it again dismissed as irrational. This visit was at the beginning of August, and I was able to hold out from going to the doctor again until a couple of weeks ago.

My third visit yielded much of the same, except this time the doctor finally listened to me!! I explained my symptoms in detail - lump in throat; prickly, isolated pain in throat; sore teeth; stuffy nose; sore sinuses; plugged ears; pain radiating up to ears; etc. He said I either have "allergies or acid reflux." I was prescribed prednisone and penicillin for 10-days. One of these medicines (perhaps both) brought back the cramping, heartburn, and palpatations full-force. I was extremely happy to finish the 10-day course.

My fourth and most recent visit finally helped me out, as I, based on the support I have received from this forum, requested a visit to an ENT to confirn/deny that I have LPR and that I do not have the big C. I will be going in for this visit on Tuesday.

I have learned so much from reading the posts on this forum, not only about this stupid LPR, but also about the human body itself. I truly believe in a mind-body connection, and think that 85% of our symptoms are in some way tied to stress/anxiety/etc. My symptoms first appeared during the an extremely stressful time, and thinking I have the big C only increased this stress - which only increased my symptoms. I know I don't have cancer (I'm a 26 year-old, non-smoker, light-drinker, fit exerciser), but even knowing there is a small chance still plays crazy tricks with your mind. Reading the posts on this forum has really helped calm me down.

I recently read the post about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and followed this diet for a little over a week. My stomach problems disappeared after a few days, but my lump in throat and sore/plugged ears did not (although from what I read, this can take 6+ months). If the ENT confirms I have LPR, I am going to attack this diet hardcore, and from the small results I have seen, would suggest it to all of you as well.

Anyhow, sorry for the extensive post, but I wanted to thank all of you for posting and providing support for those of us new to this crazy world! Hopefully my post(s) can also provide some assistance/suppor to others experiencing the same symptoms.

P.S. A special thanks to nedflanders, CharBerry, and flowergirl2day - I have especially enjoyed reading your posts, and have gained much insight from them. God Bless!
