Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

Sorry you feel so miserable. I totally understand because I feel the same way. I have bad GERD which caused erosive esophagitis and will need PPI's for life according to my GI. I also have IBS. I take my meds faithfully and try very hard to do all the right things i.e. watch what I eat, don't go to bed for 3 hours after eating, have my bed elevated but still there are days and nights especially that I am absolutely miserable. I have lots of upper abdomen pain mostly on the left side under my breast and sometimes in the cleavage area. I also have the worst belching episodes. I burp more and louder than my husband. They come from way down in my gut and it often hurts when I burp. Lately I also have lots of flatulence.
I would suggest that you go back and see the GI. Perhaps you could have slow gastric emptying - which I was diagnosed with after a special gastric emptying scan. There is also something called Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) which I was tested for but did not have although my GI gave me a script for meds for it anyway. I did not try them because I have a bigger issue that I'm also dealing with - iron deficiency anemia which might be caused by my PPI's. It never ends...

Best of luck to you.

Hi
Since you are on PPI's abd are iron deficient it would also be of benefit to have your folate vit D and especially your Vit B12 since these are all utilzed by the gut.....
I ended up with severe deficiencies especailly B12 to the point were i lost my memory at times and a complete host of symptoms Happy to say I am all well again......

I have celiac disease which lead to it and reading what you were saying about flatulence and burping and IBS (that is what they said I had then reflux as well) was like me from the gluten amongst other symptoms

Have you been tested for this?

I hope you are well again soon
Thanks Rainbow for the comments. I'm glad that you are doing better! I did have a complete work-up to determine the cause of my iron deficiency including colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy and blood tests for B12 and a celiac panel and all were normal. I have heard however, that the celiac blood test often is not totally accurate. How did you know you had celiac? I have been on oral iron for 2 weeks as of today and am going for a blood test and follow-up visit with the hematologist on Wednesday.
Hi
Yes it is true that the blood tests for celaic can be skewed for a number of reasons
Iga deficiency
Mild damage
Not eating gluten or large amounts
It doesnt mean you dont have it by the time I went for a endoscopy I had not had much gluten at all still trying to deal with it and felt so sick I thought I wont eat it agian for a while.....My GI said by damage could be furtherdown and taking sample is not always definitive as he said there really isno gold standard so he suggested as a doctor did 2 years ago do a challeng come of it for a coulpe of months and see what happens well I felt better but was still having symptoms due to the deficiency so I thought well it cant be that so I ate it agian felt worse and now my deficiencies were paramount and i was very ill got my folate vit D and B12 (at this point I didnt know about my iron I onlty just realized how low it was a few days ago when going over my tests even though it was normal low ferritin and low iron) and thought well I ma feeling soooo much better but when I came off the gluten my healing of pins and needles foggy brain cognitive function really began to healing at break neck speed.......I have a very good active form of B12 methylcobalamin 10,000mcg 3 x a week I have been doing this for 4 months...This is very differnt to the standard protocol for B12 thereapy but I have a fab doctor who knows what he is up to I take 5mg of folate with the injection vitd 1 per week high dose........I feel my oron will be up dueto the B12 and going gluten free....

It does take along time to start getting the nutrients back after being so deficient that is why its important to get very high dose to saturate the system at least with B12 not iron as too much is not good for you....

I would be interested to know what your B12 & folate levels were and I would if I was you request a uMMA & homocysteine tests as they will be elevated in a B12 deficiency at cellualr level the ranges are there for PA but nuero damage can occuer with levels below 550.....So just because they say its normal get the copies of results for your self....look what happened to me I probably should have had some iron to so I am going to ask about that.......

As you are low on Vit D and iron I would lay bets you are low on B12 as well and that celiac is high possibility as well......:(

But at least it can be treated....

I know with B12 taking them orally doesnt always work if the stomach can not uptake it meaning you need intrinsic factor and hydrchloric acid to absorb it iron is the same so perhaps the iron is not being absorbed properly

It would be interesting to to know your CBC like MCV & RDW..

Best wishes;)
A little history first: About 2 years ago I had an Upper GI and a colonoscopy. GI dr told me I had GERD and that my esophagus had some erosion. I have been taking meds ever since.

Over the past few months, I have been getting very bad pains in the center of my upper abdomen. These pains can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. It's like waves of pain just move through there. I lost 25 pounds over the summer due to not being able to eat because of these pains. Once the pain subsides, I notice that I have alot of gas. Could this just be trapped gas or possibly an ulcer? I think I am going to make an appointment with the GI again :(
Story sounds like mine. I have had several upper endoscopys and my story goes like this:

I was experiencing mild sternum area pain on the left side and constant belching. An upper endo identified gastric ulcer and slight hiatal hernia. After 8 weeks of Prevacid once a day, the 2nd endo showed no gastric ulcer and a perfect stomach. But this was too good to be true.

After few months being off Preacid, the upper sternum area pain & constant belching returned. A 3rd endo found another gastric ulcer & gastritis this time. After 8 weeks of Prevacid twice a day, the 4th endoscopy showed no Ulcer but some slight gastritis remained.

The Doctor's instructions were to try to manage with Pepsid Complete and antacids, use PPIs only as necessary, possibly alternate every 2 months on and off if needed.

What i decided to do was to ween off Prevacid and start my new diet and supplement regeim. I started by reducing Prevacid from 2 a day to 1 a day for a week. For the next 5 pills, I took one every 1.5 days by taking at night one day, then wait a day, then take it the next morning etc.... Then I weened off it completely by taking a pill every 2 days for a total of 3 pills then every 3 days for total of 2 pills. All the while starting up the new diet and yeast killing supplements.

Right now i am off PPIs and have been off them for months. What i found that worked for me was in a heartburn book written by Dr. Sherry Rogers. One key reason for various gastro issues identified in the book is yeast overgrowth. Knowing from testing my issues were not bacteria or allergy related, I followed the diet and supplement recommendation for a month and it has provided me virtually complete relief (dare i say cure?).

I did feel a mild sternum area pain recently because i added sugars (and some coffee) back into my diet but once i stopped them, things felt healed once again.

My personal thinking why i had the ulcers, pain and acid, and other symptoms... STRESS! leading to yeast overgrowth and a leaky gut causing various symptoms and creating a viscious cycle.
