I know acid reflux medication causes palpitations (heart pounding). My doc took me off my GERD medication the second I mentioned these palpitations. In fact, I am on my fourth medication...

If you're taking medication for acid reflux, talk to your doc about getting something else.

Hows Ireland... always wanted to go there.
Hi there, thanks for the reply :) I might quit the tablets i am on and see how much of a difference it makes, I havent been feeling that much better while taking them anyway.

Ireland is good, although would you believe I am in the South of Spain at the minute :) meant to be having a good time but affraid im having a rough time with this heavy beat and acid reflux, along with eye pain, chest pain like im taking a heart attack, shooting pains in my arms, back pain and random jabbing pains down my tubes lol, but sure no better place than a beautiful place to feel like cr*p.

Thanks again, when i get home i will look into this much further, I feel terrible at the minute

Sorry to hear your troubles, it sounds like you're on vacation. Hope you feel better.
Many of us have experienced pounding and/or skipping heart with reflux alone. It was 1 of my occasional symptoms BEFORE "the floodgates broke" 1 day and I KNEW I had a serious problem called reflux disease.
Right so I stopped the meds for the acid, and it looks to have had a good effect on the palpatations, far less pounding heart. Not sure now about the liver though as im very drunk and typing on a tiny mobile laptop, so excuse any spelling mistakes, but so far so good (Untill the morning)

luckily there are many great chemists in spain, and you can get just about anything without prescription, so i stalked up on some tablets along with liquid type anti acid meds.

anyway speak to you all later :dizzy:
So are you all saying that you can get heart palpatations with reflux alone? Because I have been having them alot the past couple of days. I haven't even been taking reflux meds at all. But I am having heart palpatations and muscle twitches for 3 days. It is freaking me out, not to mention the reflux. Anyone have any idea's?

Odd... I remember a couple weeks ago I was lying down ready to go to bed when I began having extreme heart palpitations and all of a sudden my muscles began to twitch. The twitching was in every muscle group in my body. I had them for 3 days, but the heart pounding ended the next morning. My doc said it was from the medication, which I stopped.

I am not sure if GERD or acid reflex causes the twitches or palpitations, all I know is that it is a side effect of the one drug I was taking.
Glad you shared that. So can I ask your thoughts on something? I had leg surgery one week ago to have some bad veins taken out of my leg. I was on 800 mg of IBUPROFEN every 8 hours with Tylenol inbetween for 7 days straight. I just stopped the pain meds yesterday morning. My leg is healing really nicely and I went without any meds today. So do you think that the twitching started today because I am off the meds and they are clearing out of the body? And maybe they had built up alot just now and I am feeling a so called delayed reaction effect? I was fine until today. ugh! The last time I had this I had been taking Sudefed for my allergies too many days in a row and I was twitching day and night until it got out of my system. My neurologist even told me that's what was causing it. Meds can do that. But I wasn't sure about IBUPROFEN AND TYLENOL. Any thoughts? It is freaking me out! Because I hadn't had heart palpatations for months eithor and these both came on after one week of pain meds. Now it's giving me MAJOR anxiety.

On my second consecutive day of twitching I decided to call my doctor to ask her what she thought could be causing my muscle twitching. Before I was able to talk to my doc, the receptionist told me to take Ibuprofen. So I am not sure that ibuprofen would cause twitching, especially when it is proscribed to reduce them. I would give your doc a call.
I would be quite interested in knowing if any of you also suffer from sinus problems also and think there is a link to acid reflux or gerd. In my case persistent sinus inflammation.

Between allergy, acid reflux, sinus problems, heart palpatations and the multiple other problems with myself I think they are all linked, I will get a referral to a specialist when I get home from Spain next week sometime.

I think sinus problems linked to acid reflux is a fairly new thing? Maybe not? Something to do with producing too much mucus?

Anyone also getting the palps that are visable in the stomach?

I generally feel ill everyday, its hard not to get down when you constantly feel tired and sick, and living in what feels like a contstant cloudy headed cr*p dream.
I am thinking the twitching is my low vitamin D level. I bet it is not up to normal yet. Ugh!

Also...I do have bad sinus trouble and allergies almost year round so yes! I think that causes some of my reflux trouble. Grrrrh!

Hang in there too!
I stopped my acid meds, which has had a good effect on the palpatations, well those and coffee and caffine in general.

Now I have the terrible heartburn, which I would rather have that the heart pounding. I am asking my Dr for a referral letter in the morning for a specialist.

Ahh another question, do any of you wake with what I can only describe as confusion or racing thoughts with the reflux? Im thinking that the acid pain is maybe just waking me at the wrong time or during a dream or whatever, ahh I dunno :D
Sparkyireland,
As to your question about waking up/confusion/racing thoughts ~I have really bad, really vivid dreams, and lots of nightmares which started when I began taking PPI medication. It's awful.
all my life I have constant sound in my ears/head. I learned to live with it without explanation from any one. Recently the beat changed, it would skip he beat and be louder. At the same time I developed heart palpatation which cause to wake me at night I realized on my own that I was hearing my own heart. Doctor could not explain the reason for my irregular heart beat. About a year ago I started to be treated for acid reflex, would that explain my irregular heartbeat?
Hi there :)

Just a quick question, can a heavy pounding heartbeat (normal pace, bmp) be linked to acid reflux ?

Many thanks
A sensitivity to it can I think. That is, an exaggerated link to the heart and GI. Blood flow to the stomach area greatly increases after eating so if the times when you are experiencing GI symptoms are post meal, that could be why the heartbeat. Also, posture after a meal (slouched sitting with a full stomach)makes me more aware of the blood flow in that area. Back when I thought I had heart problems the GI issues made the hypersensitivity even worse until I decided it was just an odd GI thing.

Confusion and racing thoughts are possibly anxiety related, due to the stress of what you see as your failing health.
Aside from relying on Prevacid I use water to deal with heartburn. I used to rely a lot on Gaviscon but it messes with your digestion a bit when taken too often. You do need some stomach acid:) I have a tall glass of water when i first wake up, and make sure to have at least 4 or 5 during the day. I also don't eat within a couple hours of bedtime, and I have only one cup of coffee a day which helps. High fat foods like gravy and some sauces are especially bad. Sometimes I get a racing heart after drinking too much and it is a bit hard on my gut if I live like that for a few days in a row.
There are also different families of stomach meds-proton pump inhibitors vs histamine receptor antagonists - Nexium vs Zantac so maybe the different med family will get you past the side effects, although your Dr should have tried this already.
My stomach problems improved once I went on anxiety medication. Some of us seem more susceptible to stress related gut problems.
Best of luck!
Protonix doesn't list palpatations, heart pounding as a side effect although some of the other PPI's do. I wonder why. Anyways, I've been having some of this going on and I stopped the Protonix 5 days ago. So far I'm having it less.
Acid reflux does make your heart pound and feel pressure I found out by making a few trips to the emg room only to find out there was nothing wrong with my heart that's one of the symtoms of acid reflux. Eat a little honey before going to bed that should help. Doctor told me you would know the difference if it was actully an attack on your heart the pain is greater than acid reflux.
When I lie down at night for bed, I sometimes get what I consider odd heart palpatations. My heart feels as though its beating oddly and very hard. It can last for a few minutes then subsides. It only appears at night. Anyone else with this?

I take prilosec and zantac.
hey acid relux has a cure,
First you need to know that all acid relux medicine are only for giving you relief not curing.
Second you need to introduce laugh in your life a lot find some firends and spent most of the time with them where you enjoy the most.
Third Relax and forget about your problem and try to live normal life by doing some excercise daily......must.
Trust me i had severe symptom of acid reflux (Gerd+Throat pain+Tongue Burning) its all gone .

by spending most of the time with my friends laughing and chatting and doing excercise regularly (yoga) now i am not at all taking acid medication.
and...The more you think about it the worse it goes....i had all your symptoms and doctor was keep on suggesting one and another medicine for palpitation..depression..acid reflux..bla bla...and i was really gone mad with throat pain ...tongue burning sensation..heart palpitation while going to sleep anytime....

but its all gone cuz i have forgotten about it .....i just started enjoying my life in this pain as well ...by excercising spending time out.... relaxing and it went automatically..

so most of the problems are in our head..............try to relax . go for movies...sports ...gym ...yoga....forget about anything just have fun...all the way... all these problems will disappear trut me...plz.
I too get this really bad heavy pounding in chest. Think it is due to acid reflux but that is only a guess. It can be really scary cos sometimes I think i'm going to pass out with it. I have had really bad problems with acid for years now and it is only getting worse. It sometimes feels sore and quite difficult to swallow my food and makes life really miserable. Going into hospital on Monday to have ERCP done because i have Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction, which means that there is a valve next to my gallbladder that is too tight so i get a lot of pain at right side too. Not a very happy life at the moment. Lost 4 stone in 3 months cos i can't eat. Anyone else have these symptoms?
I get this sometimes but wonder if mine is connected to the Protonix or strong antihistamines/decongestants I'm taking. I wonder if you don't notice this during the day because your busy. This is my 7th day off of Protonix so if I still have this I guess it's due to the allergy medicine.
I was doing a search for Protonix and came across your post. Decongestants and antihistamines can elevated your blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure it is dangerous to use decongestants. The decongestants, like Sudafed for one which is an otc drug, can increase your heart rate. Rapid heart rate can cause palpitations. Ask your doc.
My heart goes nuts as soon as lay down lately .. I would be so tired but can't fall a sleep because my heart is pounding so hard, and it gets doubly worse if I lay on my left side. Does this happen to anyone?
There has been a great response on this thread, I must say that the fact that there are so many here with acid reflux and palpitations just makes it more likely that they are linked.

I am quite sure that most Drís would disagree, but really I wouldnít blame them for that. I know for sure if I asked my Dr if Acid reflux and palpitations were linked he would most likely say no.

Personally I think that the people that suffer from both are the people to be asking anyway, maybe if there was a handful of Drís with both symptoms then we might get somewhere quicker :)

So anyway, I had an endoscopy done, and although I am waiting on Biopsy results the Dr was able to tell me that there was quite a lot of inflammation of the oesophagus.

I have been searching and searching on the net, which is probably part of my problem, maybe I should be exercising and eating healthy or something :D

Anyway I have been reading up on the Vagus nerve and palpitations, and what I have read is interesting. I am wondering that in my own case that maybe the inflammation is aggravating it in some way and this is causing inflammation, I am also thinking that this is even going as far as causing my headaches and neck pain & sinus inflammation, and now worsened allergy like symptoms. Seem to be sneezing and coughing more than ever.

I think all these things are linked.

Nothing we can do but keep going I suppose ;)
I finally have put all my symptoms together and the doctor agrees that it is damage to the vagus nerve from MS> It started with rapid heart rate which i take medicine for. Went to the throat about 10 years later and now is in the stomach with trouble digesting. The vagus nerve is the 10th cranial nerve that runs thru the throat voice heart and ends in stomach

Blues, I would like to know what medication it was you were on that your doctor said caused the heavy heart pounding and twitching. Because ive been on an assortment of PPI pills and i soon started to get heavy heart palpitations AND im getting muscle twitching/spasms all over the place, mostly in the abdomen area.

I have stopped use of all PPI/acid reflux pills for 3 months but im still twitching all over the place. its very frustrating.

I would like more info from what your doc exactly said about the pounding and twitching and how its related to the med u were on and what med you were on.

Thanks!

i have all the symptoms you mentioned. I am going nuts trying to figure out whats going on. But i get nasal inflammation and congestion, either the right or left nostril will get completely or almost completely blocked, especially when I lay down. I have no idea if this is a result of acid reflux or not. I use to get heart palps but they have gone away for the most part thank God. I now have incredible twitching/spasms and a bunch of other stuff.
I never burp and bring up acid or taste the sour acid, so i dont even know if i have acid reflux or not, but i was diagnosed with it last year.
Im at the point where i dont know if the twitching and sinus/nose mucus and inflammation problems are caused by acid reflux or side effects by PPI/acid reflux meds, OR if i got sum kind of virus.

i totally understand what you are going through and I know exactly how you feel. I also get extreme bouts of lightheadedness where i feel almost like im going to pass out, i was thinking that might be from acid reflux "fumes" or sumthing, i dunno.

Its all just theories.
I totally agree that the palpitations and acid reflux are related because of the "vagus nerve'. My palps started mid Feb. and went on for months and then in May the reflux hit "hard". I was stuffed up and had mucus galore but never really had the chest pain it can cause. Mine was silent and went right for the throat. Burning mouth and throat. Nexium was started and as I started healing the palpitations went away. It wasn't till a couple of days ago, that they started again every now and then. These are not serious. I wore a moniter for a month and the palpitations you can live with because they don't hurt you. That took my anxiety away.
But like someone said on this thread...You have to relax. Easily said right? I think some things hang around for awhile and then they disapear as fast as they apeared.
For the person that posted she got rid of her "Thraot pain" after she relaxed and did Yoga....how long did you have your problems before they went away?
I experience heavy chest and heart flutterings. I think it may be related to the PPI's.
