Re: LPR - lump?
Sep 14, 2011
A gastro will probably want do an endoscopy to check your stomach and esophagus.

You might have a hiatus hernia.

I've had LPR/GERD for several years and from what I've learned about it, the only "cure" is surgery. Mine thus far is responding to PPIs but it always comes back.

I had 2 gastric ulcers, (not caused by h-pylori) which were healed by being on a PPI for 4 months. The GERD relief lasted less than a year then LPR set in too. Now I'm back on the PPI. Of course I didn't watch my diet back then.

A colonoscopy checks the lower gastrointestinal tract. An endoscope checks the upper GI tract.

Avoid fats, sugar, spices, coffee (no decaf either), tea (herbal tea is okay), tomatoes, acid veggies/fruits, chocolate and 'bad' carbs.

Diet is really trial and error. So keep a log of what happens 1 to 3 hours after eating. You'll soon see a pattern of foods to avoid. Also what I can eat, you might not be able to and vice versa. People react differently to foods.

Don't eat for at least 2 - 3 hours before bedtime, elevate the head of your bed several inches (5 - 8 inches) or use a wedge and sleep on your left side. Drink plenty of water.

I wish you well.
Thanks for your reply. I actually have had both colonoscopy and endo last year - and I do have Gerd and Hiatal h. This is new however, and the next test he says is the 24 hour test, which I am trying to avoid. The nexium (40) a day (in the morning) is really not working totally - I had a bad attack today - guess I need to start recording what I eat. It is wierd - when I burp the lump gets worse instead of better. My chest begins to hurt a little too. This is miserable, but I want to avoid the operation - can't afford the time off work (I get no sick leave). I would like to find a specialist in AZ for this problem, but I don't know if there is one.
The head of my bed is elevated now 7 inches - has been for a while. I am afraid to go off the ppis for the test, because the one day I did not take one - the next day I had pain in the side of my neck and an ear ache.
