Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

Hello all,

I am very new to all of this, but have been reading these boards daily. I have found them to be most helpful and comforting. My story started 5 months ago when I was diagnosed with severe anemia (bad vegetarian diet and heavy periods) and needed a blood transfusion. The transfusion brought me from an iron level of 6.7 to over 11, however, I had an allergic reaction to the blood and developed hives, SOB, etc. Benadryl and Prednisone was prescribed and worked somewhat, but the SOB remained. A few weeks later I had an allergic reaction to having my hair dyed, back on Prednisone. Shortly after I started having sinus problems, which included blurry vision and a lot of dizziness. My primary sent me over for an MRI which showed my sinus cavities are completely full, with no air and suggested that I go to an ENT.

While waiting for my insurance to kick in my symptoms stayed about the same, but had a few new stomach issues added to the mix. Almost 2 months ago, my husband and I were eating popcorn when the shell of a popcorn kernel lodged in the back of my thoat, felt like just above where the adams apple would be. I spent 2 1/2 days trying to dislodge it, hacking, coughing, water pik, you name it. It felt like it passed on the 3rd day, but I was left with the feeling of a hair on the back of my tongue (constantly scraping it with my teeth to get it off, even though I know it's not there). I went in to the ENT a week or so later, who did a nasal scope (I only had a mild panic attack before hand, but found it to be easy) and confirmed my sinuses and said looks like Silent reflux, your throat is very red, inflamed and your uvula is swollen. My tongue also has an orange coating on it.

He prescribed me dexilant, prednisone and 2 courses of a z pack. I took the first course of the z pack, skipped the prednisone and dexilant thinking- what is he talking about reflux? I have no hearburn.

Just to further explain something, I hate the thought of taking pills, but not for the usual reason. I am emetephobic (fear of vomiting) and have been for the past 18 years. Have not eaten meat in 18 years since I last was sick on a cheeseburger. I am equally afraid of pills causing nausea, so I won't take them.

During this time I have been eating very little, as my stomach was acting up. 3 weeks ago, I started getting food stuck in my throat when I ate. Breads, pasta, pretzels, cereal, etc. It got to a point where I stopped eating because I would spend an hour after coughing and hacking to get the food back up and sometimes - I would get a small piece back up, but my anxiety level would be so high after it wouldn't be worth another attempt. My current diet is water, juice, ensure, cream of wheat, yogurt, bananas and pudding. And oddly enough cheddar cheese.

The Doctor suggested I see a GI and that I try taking Zantac. I had an allergic reaction to the Zantac (hives, SOB) and am now afraid to take any meds for TWO reasons. I didn't take the last round of Prednisone, just stayed with the Benadryl.

My symptoms currently are:
All symptoms are better in the morning but progressively get worse as the day goes on.
hair stuck on tongue feeling (on right), food sticking in throat (feels like left side), very occasional bitter taste, post nasal drip, throat dryness, chronic insomnia, orange tongue, stomach burning, throat burning in adams apple area and then a host of irritating GI symptoms. I only take Synthroid (7 years ago diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, then radioactive iodine, now Hypo). Additionally, I had my gallbladder out 12 years ago.

I went to my GI visit today who told me that we should do endoscopy right away since I smoked for 17 years (quit 3 years ago) and that smoking causes all kinds of cancer and that it isn't normal for people with reflux to have this kind of food sticking problem and that I shouldn't be losing this much weight (although, I believe cutting out solid food, 2 cans of Coke a day and 2 Starbucks a day and switching to water would cause that kind of weight loss). It is scheduled for Friday.

After crying for 2 hours, I called my ENT who said that reflux absolutely can case food sticking in throat and they will find me another GI.

I am so unbelievable scared, exhausted and starving. All along I assumed this was reflux, so the thought that it could be something else didn't really register until now. I am terrified of having the endoscopy too.

I really didn't mean to ramble, I just needed to get this out. It seems as though my whole life has crumbled since that blood transfusion- I've had at least 3 allergic reactions to things that I was not allergic to before, the sinus issue and now all of this? Not sure how much more of this I can take... Thank you for listening.
