Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

DGL didn't do much for me and Aloe Vera Juice is soothing and healing but doesn't take the reflux away. I've been using Aloe for months to no avail. Reflux has to do with the LES, UES muscles not closing when they should. I've been suffering since July with this and on and off Nexium. It was getting better except that I didn't watch my diet enough and ate sweets and dairy over the holidays while I was trying to heal. I also developed throat spasms back in October. Whatever you do, don't stop the PPI's cold turkey. I did that in January because they made me sicker and I rebounded and am now worse than I was two months ago. I ended up missing two weeks of work and in the worst pain of my life. So, back on the Nexium 2x a day and trying to wean off slowly to 1x a day. I'm taking Manuka honey from New Zealand and that helps as well but I think it's going to take time (months) on a bland diet. I'm down to like 10 foods that I eat and cutting dairy (I'm lactose intolerant and already have extreme mucous from the reflux), gluten and grains has helped tremendously so far. I don't get that full and bloated feeling that contributes to more reflux like I did with the grains and gluten (I'm not celiac but some foods take longer to break down in everyone contributing to reflux in some). Cutting fats is good too since too much fat will trigger reflux since it takes longer for your body to digest. The less fat I use, the better I feel. (I'm 5'3 and 111 lbs so this was a bit upsetting to me since my weight loss has been so drastic but it's necessary). The alkaline foods seem to sit well with me but I added low histamine foods as well, hence the 10 or so foods on my list that I can eat. The only reason I am following a histamine diet is because I'm hoping it will cut or at least limit the congestion that I have from the reflux and the inflammation in my throat (I have LPR symptoms of reflux as well meaning it comes into my mouth..yuck). I hope some of these things will help you. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. My friend swears by Apple Cider Vinegar with the "mother" in it but if you have more acid (as I do from the rebound) it's not a good idea. I also found fennel to be good for healing the stomach. Good luck!
