Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

Hello everyone. I'm sure there are probably a lot of posts just like this one so sorry if I'm asking a question that's been asked a billion times, but I'm just looking for answers.....here is my story:

In 2012, I was diagnosed with ulcers. I was never satisfied because even though I had several ER doctors tell me this, an endoscopy was never done, nor were there any other tests beyond a blood test done to indicate that it really was an ulcer. But I would take Prevacid for awhile, then the attacks with the heartburn/burning stomach/radiating pain would be back and I would end up back in the ER.

At the end of 2012, I just stopped having the attacks. Then, last year I began to have them again.. although they were different. Much more severe, accompanied by extreme nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, dizziness, yellowing skin, inability to eat, etc. I had several excruciating attacks where it felt like acid was in both my chest and stomach, and would radiate to my back and leave me physically unable to cope.. I never went to the ER because I was afraid the doctors here in Oregon (I moved here from Oklahoma back in 2013) would tell me the same thing the other doctors had told me. Until one night I had an attack that lasted about 8 hours. I felt like I was going to die..so I went in, was immediately given paid meds, fluids, anti-nausea medication, and given a scan which showed that my gallbladder had stones in it and looked..well, practically diseased. There was a thick outer layer and it had to be removed in an emergency surgery. So I had a laproscopic removal (this was a few days shy of two weeks ago) and everything was fine afterwards, until about four days ago when I had another attack.

This time the attack was as severe and scary as the one that drove me to finally give in and go to the ER when I had my gallbladder removed. I had diarrhea, nausea, I was dizzy, and the pain was tremendous. So I was readmitted, given fluids, anti nausea meds, pain meds, same deal....the ER doctor told me it could be one of a few things, but that it was likely an extreme case of acid reflux, and that I should make an appointment with the doctor who performed my gallbladder surgery to follow up.

From that time(Sunday night) until today, I have been doped up on meds. Yesterday and the day before I couldnt' hold down any food. And until about an hour ago, have had that dull heartburn pain in my chest. I went to the doctor earlier, and he gave me a prescription for Protonix. I have been taking Prevacid, but it hasn't been working like it once did. I've never taken Protonix but I will be on the generic version, because I'm not insured and can't afford $100 every ten days to keep myself healthy. I just wonder, does anyone have experience with Protonix or has anyone here had problems after gallbladder surgery? Or with an extreme case of acid reflux like this? This has been going on for so long that I don't even remember what good, or "normal" feels like. It has compromised my family life, my ability to go to class and work, social life..everything.

My doctor said the next move (if I had no luck with Protonix) was to do another ct scan, endoscopy, ultrasound, blood workup, etc. My husband and I have worked hard saving up for a trip to Costa Rica next month and have non refundable tickets and this is just all coming at a really, terrible time. I'm tired of being sick and wondering if it's just a common condition, or something more severe like some form of stomach cancer. And when these attacks happen, they are severe....the kind that leave you wondering if you're going to be around for your daughter to grow up. It's exacerbated my depression and I've been crying a lot and I'm just to a point where, if this round of medicine doesn't work I don't know what I'm going to do. Any feedback, thoughts, experience, etc. is highly appreciated.
