... I believe it's possible to have both. My understanding was that GERD usually signifies lower-esophageal symptoms (chest symptoms mostly), while LPRD signifies symptoms higher up (throat, voice, sinus). I think the name just explains the symptoms; the cause of the two conditions is the same: weak lower-esophageal sphincter. The three doctors I've seen so so far just... (9 replies)

... I think the sour taste is indicative of acidity. If you have mucus without the acid taste maybe that's something else. Feeling like your throat is closing up is a common allergic reaction (hives is the other common allergic reaction). The allergic throat tightening is called anaphylaxis. ... Vanessa, do you just smell the chemical or TASTE it as well? I taste mine in my throat/mouth and always thought it's from the meds being digested in the stomach. Come to think of it, that does not take all day though. This sensation does not happen within any specific time frame after I take the medication so perhaps is NOT medication related.
