hi hewlett,

thanks for bringing everyone's attention to vitex - and congratulations, hope that your new & drier complexion is staying for good ! :) i too suffer from extremely oily skin [not much acne thanks to paula's bha/aha products]. i've tried B5/B-50 complex/biotin for 2 months and experienced hair-breakage and sleep disturbance, so i stopped. i'm now taking b6/zinc/copper hoping that would help control the oil production - no drastic change yet *sigh*
its been 2 months now. after reading your post, i did a search on vitex and stumbled upon one source stating that we should only take vitex up to 1 year, and another source stating that we should only take vitex up to 2 years ?? obviously, they're suggesting that vitex is not suitable for long term use. do you know anything about this .. ?

I have read that you should take a break from vitex. I can't remember the time limit. I don't see taking it long term a problem if it balancing your hormones. I think the reason for stopping the herb is cause there are no long term studies on it. Scientist are not going to study a herb because there is no money to be made. They can't copywrite herbs. It is working great for me with no side effects. In fact I feel better, I blame my acne on unbalanced hormones so getting my body in balance can't be a bad thing only possitive. People take the pill long term to force their hormones to do something unnatural so I can't see taking a herb to balance hormones a problem. But saying that, I really don't know if in the long run if there will be problemsbut I am willing to cross that bridge when I come to it... I also have used B5 (caused fatigue), antibiotics for years( still oily and still broke out) Accutane ( great while I was on it but but when I went off reverted back to acne and oily skin). This herb has helped me more than all of those... :) :) :)
