For a few weeks, when I didn't have to go out much, I tried doing as little as possible to my face. I aimed to not wash it at all (though water would sometimes get on it when I washed my hair). Sounds gross, but so what. I would go like 6 days without washing my face. And my acne improved. I guess my skin started balancing out its oil production as the oil wasn't being scraped away every day. It was good, and I could go out without make up on and not feel embarrassed about my skin, because it was fairly clear. Now however I'm back at university and not confident enough to wear no make up here, so I kind of have to wash my face once a day now to get it off (though often I leave my make up on all night, and sometimes for a couple of days because I really think the washing is worse than the leaving make up on).

My point is, if I was a bloke (as blokes can't wear make up) I would definitely stop washing my face full stop, no water, no products, nothing. I think this would help me, and maybe some other people.
