Masterherbalist,
Great post thanks for the information. I know I am late on getting in the middle of this discussion but just have to put my 2 cents in. It seems you guys are actually on the same side of the fence on this argument and may not realize it. Both diet and hormones play a role in acne, with the one common factor the LIVER!!!!! The Liver has many functions and is the 2nd most important organ in the human body behind the heart. The liver has to break down all the bad foods we eat, sugar, carbs, fried foods, artifical sweetners, chemicals in meat and all of the other unatural chemicals we consume some we take in without even knowing it, such as enviromental toxins. So that is why some people can clear their acne through diet, if the liver doesn't have to process these toxins it lifts the burden of that extra work so it can better purge the body of toxins in a natural way, ie through the digestive system and body waste, hence these toxins are no longer pushed out through the skin to form acne. The liver can do its job regulating HORMONES without a problem. That is all it takes for some people, just that little relief on the liver. However for some people the liver is SO over burdened that diet alone can not cure their acne. Years of abuse, can cause a sluggish liver, constant usage of antibiotics, birth control, and any other medication taken for years at a time take a big toll on the liver. Alchol doesn't even have to be a factor in this equation, but it doesn't help, then maybe take in to factor if you have ever been in an accident that might have hurt one of your other organs, here again, the liver is working overtime taking up the slack. If your kidneys or digestive system aren't up to par, it burdens the liver, which again henders the livers ability to breakdown toxins, regulate hormones, etc, so you may have cystic acne or just acne. So I hope you are following my drift, for some of you this may just be old news, but I wish I had figured this out years ago. I fell years ago, banging up my kidneys. So my liver had to over compensate for a slow kidney. All work on my kidneys and my liver throughout the years has been normal. However, that doesn't mean much, a sluggish liver can be in the normal range. Years of BC pills, a kidney that was banged up putting a strain on liver, a horrible diet, a few years of heaving drinking in college and my liver was tired. I had been to derms and taken everything under and over the sun to get some relief from my cystic acne. Had I known then that all I needed to do was take better care of my liver, I could have lived all these years without all these cyst and scars on my face, but there is good news there are lots of easy ways and some damage to the liver can be repaired. This is why sometimes when people have taken accutane, their acne comes back worse than ever, their liver just can't deal with all the crap it has to breakdown and has been weakened by the accutane. So in short( I mean in long!) take care of your liver and it will take care of you and your face!! If you don't believe me, just take a few to look up online the functions of the liver. it is hard to see when you are focusing on one thing, but if you step back and look at the big picture of the human body, you can see how it is truly all related!

Of course it's related, after all the liver is responsible for determining how much insulin the pancreas should release, how much tryglycerides to produce, as well as the enzymes for the growth factors, hormones, etc that we need to produce acne or to stop it! This is why members that do the liver flush, detox, or take liver aiding supplements are actually able to eat some foods again that they had to previously eliminate. =)
