HELP!!
I have little under the skin bumps all over my face and I don't know what to do to clear them up. I have used ProActive--worked at first, but doesn't now. I also went to the derm and he gave me an antibiotic and a bp prescription. That hasn't worked. Does anyone else have these?? My face looks normal (no white heads or big bumps) except for all of the little bumps under the skin on my entire face. I am so embarassed about them--it makes me look diseased!!! Please let me know if you have any helpful info!!!
From what you've said, it sounds like those could be either "milia," which I know very little about, or "whiteheads," as distinct from pustules, or other unpleasant lesions. Whiteheads, or closed comedones, are pores that are clogged just below the surface of the skin which appear as slightly elevated, flesh-coloured bumps. I personally find benzoyl peroxide highly effective in drying them out in a matter of two or three days (though they will continue to return until the amount of oil secreted by the pores and the shedding of dead skin cells normalize). You might also wish to try a gentle scrub, which I also find helpful when used 2-3 times a week.
Thanks for the help. I got three different treatments for these bumps today at Walgreens. I hope that the combination of the products will work to get rid of the them. I am so tired of not having a good self-esteem because of these bumps! I met a cute guy with a fun personality who played professional football when I met him(he got injured after that so he doesn't anymore). He got my phone number and called me for 2 months to try to get me to go out with him. I never would because I thought that when he saw me in a different lighting he would see the bumps and not want to date me anymore. Now he is dating some other girl. I am just ready to have a clear complexion so that I can be more confident in myself. I know that I sound vain, but I am so sick of feeling inferior to others because of my complexion.
Hey
I have the bumps also. They suck! Your face totally looks fine in most lighting then other times it is just nasty, I know how you feel. They rarely come above the skin so you can never even get rid of them.
I went to my dermo and he put me on Doxy its an antibiotic. I have only been on it for 1 week but my bumps are starting to clear up.
I also switched my face wash to Phisoderm and I use Neutrogena Multi-Vitamin lotion, thanks to this board and the people on it, and they are also helping.
Good Luck
Keep me posted if you discover anything or let me know how your new products are working

My under the skin bumps are almost gone! I have been using Total skin care glycolic gel. It is really good stuff and I've only been using it for a week! I got it from the drugstore website, not sure where else to buy it? Good luck!
Thanks to both of you for the advice and help!! I woke-up this morning and my face did look a little better--I could see a small improvement. So I hope that after I use the products for a longer period of time my face will look 100% better. I am using Neutrogena Pore Refining Cleanser, Neutrogena 2% salicyic acid, and benzoyl peroxide. I hope they work--I will keep everyone updated on the results!!
glamourgal- I hope you are using a moisturizer too! Those products can be pretty harsh and they might make the problem worse if you let your skin get too dry.

acnescargirl2- I have been applying it twice a day. I started out once a day and only left it on for 20 minutes. Now I just leave it on and don't wash it off at all. My skin feels smoother every day.
What is a good moisturizer to use????
Anything that is oil free is your best bet. I am currently using clean n clear morning burst and I love it, but I know there are more out there that work just as well for acne-prone skin.
takara what else are you using in conjunction with this ?
I am using a salicylic face wash (by total skin care) and also taking 1 liporexin pill every morning.
So far my face hasn't seemed too dry--but I will go and get a moisturizer soon! I think the products are definitely helping my complexion---I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!
takara what is lixoprexin. are you wearing sunscreen ?
Hey Gals,
This bumpy skin thing has been the bane of my existance for the past year! I just finally-about 3 months ago, have gotten it under control.

I do gylcol/salyic peels in a docs office about every 2-3 weeks, plus i use a mild face wash, BP scrub and glycolic 10% then BP 10% ontop every morning and night.

It has helped tremendously. the peels help the scars.

I also use Bare Essential Mineral make up to hide scars now, i live with my Boyfriend and he doesnt even notice them that much!

Good luck to you all and dont let this get u down

Hi Clever!

Does your insurance cover the Peels?? Also, do you order the Bare Essentials Mineral make-up or is it available at any dept. stores? I currently use oil-free make-up by Lancome, but I have been wondering if it might be contributing to these bumps. I have been wanting to try a different foundation, but have not been sure of which kind I should try. Thanks for the help!

I'm not the one who posted about peels but I can pretty much guarantee that insurance will NOT cover peels - even if acne causes phsycial or mental trauma - as its considered cosmetic.

You can buy Bare Escentuals Mineral makeup at Sephora.
Re: peels and Bare Essentials...

Peels are NOT covered, but they can run between 40$ for a 1/4 peel all the way to $90 for a full peel. I don't know about u but i have spent tons of money on silly products and make up and this just seems like its a real investment...especially cuz its been working. so no they are not covered, but maybe u could hanld a peel a month if money is tight? good luck with this

Bare Essentials, yes i get this at Sephora, i live in LA and there are a few stores around- Santa Monica, Hollywood, etc... Otherwise if there isnt a store go to Sephora website.

Good luck to you sweetie
My friend uses Bare Minerals by Bare Essentials and she swares by it!!! She doesnt leave the house with out it! I know you can get it on line as well at the as seen on tv website.
Good Luck

I am definitley considering the peels--it does seem like a really good investment (especially considering all of the money I have spent and still continue to spend on my complexion!). My face does seem to be getting better though--I know that I have only used these products for 3 days now, but I think they are helping--I will keep everyone posted.

As a side note: I saw the football player guy that I talked about earlier in this thread (and his new perfect little girlfriend who was with him). He was looking me over big time. I felt really self-conscious because the lighting was so much brighter than when I met him (that had been my concern the whole time he was calling me). Anyway, I am just going to move on--he certainly has.
I don't think you should let acne control your life! Don't be embarassed because you have bumps on your skin. I know plenty of attractive people who have acne, including myself and probably you! Even though I am married, I still get asked out occasionally. I always turn them down but it feels great knowing that I am attractive despite acne. If there is someone you are interested in, go for it! If he is a descent person he will not judge you based on that. When I met my husband (5 years ago) he had pretty bad acne, but I didn't care because he was so funny and intelligent. Less than a year later he was completely clear. See what I would have missed out on if I had passed him up!

Try to focus on what you love about yourself, and don't worry about people judging you all the time, because they probably aren't.
I've been doing peels for about a year now. What a difference they make, especially for the little under the skin pimples. Everything comes to the surface and then just sheds away. I had BP disaster on my chest this past week (didn't know the product had BP in it...my skin does not tolerate BP at all). Well anyway, it caused a zillion little bumps to appear all over. I went for a peel yesterday, woke up today, and most of the bumps are gone. However, the downside is the price, $110 dollars a pop, then another $10 tip. My friendís an esthetician so I think Iím going to have her show me how to do them myself, then buy the peels online.
what about the drug store peels? Are they worth it? I suffer the most from these little devilish pimples too. No one can see them but me and it is worse when I can FEEL them. I will sit in front of the mirror extracting the crap out of them and most go away, then return the next evening from oil build up during the day. Every now and then one turns into a full blown zit/whitehead, but not too often. I have been trying the micro derm kits, but they aren't really geared towards the oily skinned acne prone woman. If the cheaper peels are worth it, what are good brands? Thanks!
I use the medicated apricot scrub btw, with other acne products mostly neutrogena though now I am using Noxema's antibacterial foaming cleanser, it isn't too bad.
Ok....Here's my advice (suffering acne for 26 years). Never, never, never use scrubs. We obviously suffer the same kind of acne...little plugs or pustules that can be covered with makeup, but feel like sandpaper to the touch. The scrubs only aggravate. I get the bumbs from BP as well. Hence the disaster I described in my message. I too am prone to spend way more time in the mirror looking and touching than I should. I use a lancet to extract (a professional one), but if the pustule is to the surface. Never extract anything you can't see. In fact, at my last facial, my esthetician couldn't find anything to extract (yippee). But this week is a different story.

I'm clear (I'm talking 95%) for 3 weeks out of the month. The week of my period, my skin goes crazy and I get hundreds of little bumbs all over. What I'm doing now is trying to get my peels the week before my period. However, my period is inconsistent at the moment because I went of the pill last summer and I'm still not regular (was on it for 10 years).

Now, the peels in the drugstores are not even close to what you get thru an esthetician. Professional grade peels are between 40-70% lactic acid (sensitive skin) or glycolic/salyc acid(oily/acne skin). When I get a peel, all the gunk plugged in the pore comes out just one day after the peel. Plus, the red marks clear like 100x faster.

Professional peels are expensive, but to me they are worth the money. All it takes is one peel per month. Dinner out costs more. I would rather have a peel than dinner any day of the week.

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? I suspect, I'm an elder of this board and can share the do's and doníts of my 26 year battle. I've done it all: 3 rounds of accutane, every antibiotic ever made, topical retinoid of every kind, bacteria killing topicals of every kind. You may be asking why a doctor would give me accutane(a non cystic acne sufferer) . Well, even the doc (head of dermatology at NEMC in Boston) said "this kind of acne is the most stubborn to treat". That just about made me want to cry. They can clone dolly but they can't find a cure for acne.

In all my years, I can now say that I'm 95% clear for 3 weeks of the month. I was not able to say this until last year. My goal, obviously, is to be clear 100% of the time every week of the year. I think I can achieve it. I feel like I'm sooooo close. So, I'm back to my research. And doing mini experiments on myself. Right now I'm trying 2 new products. I'm doing half my forehead with one product and the other half with the other. I'm going to see which one works.

Also, never try a new product over your entire face. Always do patch test. I would have never used a product with BP all over my chest had I known that the product contained BP. Big mistake. I do my patch tests on my forehead or chest (most prone to bumbs).
Hey Guys!!

Well my face is gradually starting to look soo much better!! The little bumps are fading and my whole face just looks better! Yesterday I bought the Neutrogena Healthy Skin lotion to use in conjuction with my other products (all they had was the kind that had spf15 in it). Also, today I bought zinc, niacin, and omega-3 complex (combination of omega-3, flax, and borage). I want to be healthy on the inside too! Hope everyone here is doing well--I wish we all could have wonderfully clear skin!!!!! :) Maybe some day soon someone will come up with a miracle product and no one will have to suffer from this ever again!
I too had very bad (little) bumps all over my face. This was all around the time of my wedding. Needless to say I was horribly depressed and crying about it. I tried so many different products, you name it I tried it. I tanned often to try and hide it but it only made it look worse. In some light it looked fine others horrible. It was really bad.

What worked for me was monthly facials and a 10% Glycolic Acid product. Which I still use today. The glycolic acid is really what made it better. I would encourage you to find a licensed asthetician and look into a glycolic acid product.
I agree that a 10% glycolic acid product is what really gets rid of those little annoying bumps.
You might want to add Vitamin A, E and Milk Thistle to vitamin routine. Stay clear of B-6 and B-12 (known to cause acne in females).
Hey Girls!!! (and Guys!!)

My face has improved so much!!!!!! I also added (last week) the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System to my skin care regimen---this has made my skin sooooo much smoother and has also faded all of my red spots (some of them have even disappeared!!). I absolutely loooove this product!!!!

The only problem that I have encountered was that on Saturday I woke-up and took my vitamins on an empty stomach---also I did not eat very much the day before because it was such a crazy day!! I did eat a sandwich shortly after taking the vitamins and a little bit later I started feeling sick. I ended up having stomach problems and I threw-up (yuck!!!). I am just wondering if taking the vitamins w/o having eaten is what caused my upset stomach and stomach pain (it was horrible!). I never threw-up again after that one time and I had not been around anyone with a virus recently. Now I am a little scared to take the vitamins--I think that Niacin was the most likely culprit if my sickness was caused from the vitamins. Do you guys think it was the vitamins???---let me know! (Also, if I do take the vitamins again I will MAKE SURE that I eat before hand--but even then I am still a little scared to take them.)

Anyway, thanks so much everyone!!!!---I hope you all had a fun weekend!
Should I start taking the vitamins again???
I think that I am going to try the vitamins again in the morning after breakfast--I do think that they were helping my complexion--I just hope that I don't get sick again!!
