Hi River,

I'm glad that info helped you! I thought of a couple more things that may help.

Make sure your son doesn't use any other harsh cleansers, toners, or spot treatments while on Accutane, this will cause extreme irritation, redness, and will actually slow the healing process. Just have him use Cetaphil cleanser and lotion, and that's it!! I know it's probably going to be pretty tempting for him to want to "spot treat" any new breakouts, but trust me, this will only cause more problems. The skin becomes incredibly sensitive, fragile, and thin while on Accutane, so this is why it is important to be extremely gentle. I made the mistake in the beginning of my treatment of using benzoyl peroxide spot treatment on my initial breakout, and I became even more peely and red, hence slowing the healing process.

I really wish your son well! I feel his pain - when I was breaking out really, really, horribly my junior year of highschool, I became a recluse. I didn't go out at all, just sat in my bed all day crying over my skin. I even stayed home from school weeks at a time because I just couldn't bare for the world to see my face. :( Acne is such a horrible disease! Accutane really gave me my life back. Once my face started clearing up - 50%, 75%, then finally, 100%, I became a whole different person! I could enjoy life once again, go out with friends, go swimming, run errands without spending two hours of face makeup ... wow, even the little things, like not being scared to go places with bright lighting was SUCH a relief!

Now four years later, my acne has come back, but it's pretty mild. My derm has agreed to put me back on a second, low dose course of Accutane in October, and let me tell you, I can't get on it fast enough! I think it's the greatest, and the side effects are completely worth the outcome in my opinion.

I always am plugging Accutane on this board, sometimes I feel like a walking infomercial (lol) but I just can't help it. The way it changed my life was so profound, I can't help but want to tell the world! ;)

Once again, good luck to your son and if you have any other questions, please, feel free to ask!

God Bless,
-Cassie-
