So at long last I went to the family Dr. today to talk about my longstanding acne problem. To date, I'd only tried OTC products to no avail. So after giving him some history about my breakouts and extreme oiliness, I popped the question - can I get some accutane. He said no (i wasnt too surprised). He wouldnt even give me any antibiotics because he said they arent most effective for my type of acne (my type meaning non-cystic I guess). I told him I dont want to throw away money on a bunch of crap for the next two years if I could just go on accutane and have it work. He said I need to "earn" my way onto accutane by trying other stuff. He prescribed some topical - I dont even remember what its called now, they had to order it for me. He says to check back in with him in September and that if its not working, we'll move to the next thing. He didnt rule out accutane in the future, just said I need to try others first. Finally, he told me that at the age of 37 he went on accutane and it worked wonders - he is still itchy many years later, but you would never know the guy had acne. It helped me to know that he has been through this himself though. He also told me he can take care of the accutane regimen (if it gets to that) and that i wont have to get referred to a dermatologist.
