Re: Hormonal Acne
Aug 11, 2005
Yup, I have that. Mine is cystic acne. However, for me the cysts don't usually turn into whiteheads, they are just very hard and painful cysts that take longer to go away.

The only place I get them on my face is usually my chin, and then I also get them on the back of my neck and upper back, if I'm not taking anything to prevent them.

BCP did help me a lot, but I'm not on them now since I'm trying to get PG. After going off the pills last year, the cystic acne came back so I got antibiotics from the dr. They work, but I don't think it's a good idea to take antibiotics long term, so right now I just started trying Evening Primrose Oil, 1000mg or 1500mg a day. I also read that if you put pure tea tree oil on the cyst just as it starts forming, that MIGHT help also. Both can be found at health food stores or organic co-ops.

Please don't feel dumb for asking, it's a valid concern, and it's problem I've suffered with for years. I know acne is "normal" when you're a teenager, but from what I read it shouldn't really be present as an adult, at least not the horrible kind of acne.

There are also hormonal imbalances that cause these problems, doesn't hurt to get that checked out either. If your dr. wants to give you Accutane, think twice. If you truly have a hormonal imbalance, the Accutane will work for a while but the acne will come back. Plus it is a very strong drug you don't want to mess with.
