Re: Yasmin and acne
Sep 20, 2005
hi jakcph---my daughter is 26 and still has skin problems. started when she was 18. sees a dermatologist regularly. ortho-tricyclin worked the best for her skin but she had to change because of break through bleeding. i know how you. some times her skin is perfect and then all of a sudden she breaks out all ove her face and they last for months no matter what she does. sometimes the dermatologist shoots cortisone right into the breakouts. that clears them within days. dr.told her it is hormonal and stress related. she tried a new product that works but not for long. i wish i had something more positive to say but i have watched her battle this for years. sometimes hse will go nowhere but to work because she is so embarrassed. nothing seems t work for long.

Yes skimom I agree with you! Derms. don't seem to want to study about hormones and acne being related! They act like everyone is a bacterial case! I went through 3 derms. before I finally found the one I go to now and I love him! He really listened to me and told me that he did believe I had hormonal acne. I think acne on the cheeks can definantly be hormonal too. I think any young girl would benefit from getting on the pill. Not only will it regulate her hormones but she will be protected from pregnancy (I'm not saying she is having sex but accidents happen). But I really like Yasmin and that is what I would recommend. If it doesn't work you can always try something else. Just make sure she takes it exactly how she is supposed to on schedule everyday or it will really mess her up.

Yes, I'm not opposed to her being on bc pills. I would be interested in hearing from ladies who had bad experiences with ortho-tri-cyclen and then took yasmin and had it work. That's probably asking too much but I would be so interested in that feedback. Ortho was so bad. She was very faithful taking it too. And patient. She finally got off in her 5th month cause her face was so bad. It's scary to start over again. It seems like everything we try (including accutane) makes it worse. Except antibiotics.

I was on Ortho Tricylen. Before I finally switched I had bad mood swings, bad acne, etc. I switched to Desogen (Apri) and now, after another year and some months, am having troubles with that. In a week and a half I'll be starting Yasmin. I can hope! Unfortunately, everyone's body is different and reacts differently to hormones. What works for someone might not work for your daughter. It's kind of trial and error...

I find it odd that a lot of women have problems on Ortho Tri (whether it's acne-related or not), yet it's the first pill that a lot of doctors prescribe!

Can I ask what exactly is Yasim, how does it work and is it available in the Uk?

I used dianette for a while which does the same thing as the pill and it made my skin so much worse. And its specifically prescribed for acne .Well at least i think it was that.
I started out on Alesse when my acne was mild and it didn't do anything one way or the other. I switched to Ortho-tri cyclen and things got much worse. Now I'm on Desogen (Apri) and it's been great for me. I can't imagine it's topicals that cleared me up so much, so I assume it's the BC. My acne was mostly on my cheeks, concentrated mostly towards my nose. I'm pretty much clear now, and just working on fading the red marks. Like the others said, it's pretty much trial and error, so I hope you have good luck finding one that works
Is Desogen mono-phasic? I think they work better than the tri-phasic pills.
You'd think all that, right? But why then is Ortho Tri the only pill approved for treating acne??
good question. ortho-tri-cyclen was used in a specific study about the relationship between acne and bc pills. that doesn't mean that other ones won't work or even work better. they just didn't pay to have a study done and their name used. acne is big business in the pharmaceutical world so i'm sure the company got a boost when the study came out. so doctor's read studies and automatically prescribe the pill that was used.
skimom- There are two types of birth control pills. Mono- phasic and tri-phasic. The mono has the same hormone amount in every pill throughout the month (Yasmin, Alesse) but the tri has different amounts of hormone level every week (Ortho Tri Cyclen, Ortho tri Cyclen lo). I think the ones with the hormone level not changing are better for acne. I tried OTC and it was terrible my face got really bad. I was on Alesse before that and I never even had a pimple! But I gained alot of weight on Alesse and Yasmin doesn't give me that problem.
oooh interesting. this is very good information for people researching pills (like me).... I've heard this over and over about the mono-phasic vs tri-phasic pills. However, I know ortho-tri does work beautifully for some so it's still up to the individual to experiment a little. It wasn't all bad that my dd took it because at least she'll know when her wedding day approaches that she might want to stay away from certain bc pills (or whenever she gets sexually active)
