It has been 3 weeks since I started Accutane and it is going better than I ever imagined! I've had acne since I was 14 (I'm 39 now), and I hemmed and hawed about doing Accutane for at least 6 years. Finally, after exhausting every other mode of treatment, I nervously started Accutane. All I can say is I wish I had done it years ago! I had an "initial breakout" that has basically subsided. What I notice is that I'm getting many fewer zits and when I get one, it heals much faster (especially the cystic ones). The best thing, though, is how much less oily I am. My hair stays clean 2 days, whereas before it was flat and greasy by midafternoon. My face has a matte finish all day instead of looking like someone dumped a bottle of Wesson oil on it. I can now wear sunscreen on my face! I even have less earwax, and who hasn't agonized over that??! :-)
The only "side effects" so far are that my lips get dry if I don't keep chapstick on them and--women please note this--my vulva gets dry. Yes, I know that's not an appealing thought, but this is the one side effect nobody told me about! At first I thought I had a yeast infection, but then it dawned on me the itching was worst right after I washed and dried down then. I have started putting a little vaseline on there in the morning, and that seems to be taking care of things. Otherwise, I have had no side effects at all, and my skin and hair look fabulous! I think that's a pretty great trade-off! So to everyone who is debating with themselves about doing Accutane, I would tell them not to be scared off by the horror stories. Just keep tabs on how you're feeling so you can nip any side effects in the bud. So far, it has been well worth it for me!!!
