I can empathize with you, Jamie, scarring literally scars not only the skin, but one's psyche. I am lucky in that my facial acne left a red, ruddy complexion, but no pit marks, so I can cover that with make-up. Unfortunately, my acne has crept onto my back and chest (it's really bad on my back), and I have heard that scarring is worse on the back than any where else. I haven't been in a bathing suit in a few years because I'm too embarrassed to expose my back.

Regarding my face, I've tried microdermabrasion, and I like it. I've had about 6 treatments. Before I say what I'm going to say, I need to remind you that I'm not a medical professional, so I'm just giving you my lay person's first-hand experience with the technique. The upsides: in one treatment, I found that it made my skin smooth (sloughed off the dry skin cells, I call it sandblasting, cause that's kind of what it's like), and in six treatments, I can say that it has caused some smoothing out of my skin. I did not, however, have deep pox marks on my skin before starting the treatment. Also, it's not as painful as some techniques may be.

The downsides: it's expensive and most insurance will not cover the cost; it takes several treatments to have any effect (the technician should tell you that not to make you buy a set number of treatments, but because it does); it may not have the "perfect skin" effect you are looking for.

There are other, more harsh treatments that have a more drastic effect than microdermabrasion, but some of them require that you put up with peeling, red skin for some two weeks after the treatment (not many of us can either show up at work with a face like that, or take two weeks off to get over it).

Have you consulted with a cosmetic surgury center that offers both microdermabrasion, laser and the like, and other reconstructive surgury? You should do a lot of research, talk to a lot of people, before entering into any treatment. Even scrubbing your face with a brush.

Good luck,
