I have a series of questions, in no particular order, pertaining to cysts. I want to know about your situation. And just maybe your replies will give some sense of relief (both physically and emotionally) to others. Here goes:

1) What, if any, topical med.'s help with your cysts?

2) Can oil-free moisturizer cause or inflame cysts? (If not, what brand do you use?)

3) How long do your cysts normally hang around (not including hyperpigmentation left over)?

4) What causes your cysts (sleep deprivation; "bad" foods [dairy, hydrogenated oils...]; stress)?

5) What's the average size of your cysts?

6) How many cysts do you normally have at one time?

7) Can you exfoliate when broken out with cysts, or do you scrub around them?

8) Do you typically get indented scars from your cysts?

9) Do you find that your cysts to be less deep/inflamed while taking supplements (vitamins, herbs, etc.)?

10) Do your cysts heal better (less redness, less scarring) while taking supplements?

11) If your cysts are hormonal, how do you know?

In brief, here's my situation: I have ovarian cysts, which indicates that my cysts are hormonal. I'm trying to wean myself off antibiotics; I take 1 pill (250 mg) nightly. I also take a multivitamin, zinc (35 mg/day), and I drink a quart of water daily.

I've been taking one antibiotic pill a day for 1.5 months now, and my skin is starting to get cysts again. (When on med.'s all the time, my skin was mainly clear.) Yet my current cysts are MUCH smaller and less deep/inflamed than my previous cysts. I hope that the supplements have something to do with that.

I know I'll have more questions to add. If anyone has any to add, feel free. I'll answer questions, too.

Thanks,
JenK
1) What, if any, topical med.'s help with your cysts?
A: All I ever use is Benzoyl Peroxide... I put a layer over my face every night before I go to bed, I think it might shrink the size of my cysts and bring down the reddness, but never fully get rid of it. I think the BP help more with whiteheads and blackheadsn (especially) than with anything else.

2) Can oil-free moisturizer cause or inflame cysts? (If not, what brand do you use?)
A: I never use moisturizer... I guess I should seeing that my face is kinda dry... but I am too scared if it'd break me out. the Oxy 10 and Oxy cleanser is meant to have an added moisturizer in it anyway.

3) How long do your cysts normally hang around (not including hyperpigmentation left over)?
A: It really does depend on the size of the cyst and whether I play around with it or not. I think average 1 week.

4) What causes your cysts (sleep deprivation; "bad" foods [dairy, hydrogenated oils...]; stress)?
A: Hormones I think.

5) What's the average size of your cysts?
A: Pea-size I guess.

6) How many cysts do you normally have at one time?
A: Well... 1-2 weeks before and during my period about 5 - 8. About 1-2 weeks after my period about 2 or 3 if any.

7) Can you exfoliate when broken out with cysts, or do you scrub around them?
A: I never exfoliate... that would irritate me like hell.

8) Do you typically get indented scars from your cysts?
A: Very rarely. Though red marks YES.

9) Do you find that your cysts to be less deep/inflamed while taking supplements (vitamins, herbs, etc.)?
A: To be honest, I haven't really thought about it... but I do think my cysts aren't so nasty as they were when I wasn't taking all my vits.

10) Do your cysts heal better (less redness, less scarring) while taking supplements?
A: I think the zinc helps with that.

11) If your cysts are hormonal, how do you know?
A: Well my face is always a lot worse around my period.
1) What, if any, topical med.'s help with your cysts?
For me it's a question of what doesn't make the cysts worse. nothing i've ever put on them seems to help them. i find that cetaphil works the best in not aggrevating them.

2) Can oil-free moisturizer cause or inflame cysts? (If not, what brand do you use?)
cetaphil

3) How long do your cysts normally hang around (not including hyperpigmentation left over)?
that can vary greatly. some will be gone in matter of days. i've had some linger for well over a month.

4) What causes your cysts (sleep deprivation; "bad" foods [dairy, hydrogenated oils...]; stress)?
i find that a lack of sleep will make my condition worse. but the cause is hormonal imbalance.

5) What's the average size of your cysts?
on my face, not too big...on the avg not usually any bigger then a few centimeters. on my back they're usually much bigger. when i was younger i had some as big as a quarter...maybe bigger.

6) How many cysts do you normally have at one time?
i used to have probably about 3 or 4 on my face. and i too many to count on my back. now 0 on my face and 1 or 2 on my back.

7) Can you exfoliate when broken out with cysts, or do you scrub around them? i never scrubed around them.

8) Do you typically get indented scars from your cysts? on my face, no...but i have a few pretty big scars from when i was younger. but i haven't added any new ones for awhile. on my back...well, it's a scarred up mess.

9) Do you find that your cysts to be less deep/inflamed while taking supplements (vitamins, herbs, etc.)? i find them to be gone. no joke. my face is 100% free of cysts. my back actually has a couple small ones. not sure if i'd say they're really cysts...when compared to what i used to have on my back, what i have now is nothing.

10) Do your cysts heal better (less redness, less scarring) while taking supplements? yeah, definitely. much faster mostly. only a tad bit less red. but much less painful. and like i said, i haven't had any new scarring.

11) If your cysts are hormonal, how do you know?
yes. for a couple of reasons. 1. my derm said "you have hormonal cystic acne". 2. i'm 23. 3. my condition responded perfectly to saw palmetto.
1) What, if any, topical med.'s help with your cysts?
Unfortunately, once they form, nothing helps with them.

2) Can oil-free moisturizer cause or inflame cysts? (If not, what brand do you use?)
I think it has no effect on my cysts.I use Neutrogena Moist SPF 15

3) How long do your cysts normally hang around (not including hyperpigmentation left over)?
Approx. 2 weeks,sometimes longer.

4) What causes your cysts (sleep deprivation; "bad" foods [dairy, hydrogenated oils...]; stress)?
I don't know.Hormones maybe?

5) What's the average size of your cysts?
Pea sized,sometimes bigger..

6) How many cysts do you normally have at one time?
Before the meds,i would get 6-7 at one time. Now,once or twice a month.

7) Can you exfoliate when broken out with cysts, or do you scrub around them?
No,it usually makes it worse so i stay away from exfoliators and scrubs.

8) Do you typically get indented scars from your cysts?
From some of them,i have about 5-7 pitted scars on each cheek.

9) Do you find that your cysts to be less deep/inflamed while taking supplements (vitamins, herbs, etc.)?
No.They will get bigger and redder anyway.

10) Do your cysts heal better (less redness, less scarring) while taking supplements?
I think taking 50 mg. zinc/day helped with the scarring.

11) If your cysts are hormonal, how do you know?
Because they usually appear 7-10 days before my period.
