Hi All,

I felt it was my duty to report my experiences with acne here since I find that there is an abundance of reviews depicting, more often that not, the horror stories of oral medicines such as accutane, minocycline, and tetracycline.

I am female, almost 25, and have had mild to moderate acne since I was 15. I never did anything about it until I was about 21, at which point I went on tetracycline, I believe the dosage was 250 mg/day, but I honestly can't remember. I was on that for about a year before I switched to minocycline, at 100 mg/day. I found it to be quite effective in 'maintaining' my acne - within a couple of days of starting mino, 'living' pimples on my face actually died, and I wouldn't have any more actual pustules, but I still had extremely greasy skin and large pores. I was on mino for about 2.5 years, which I now realize is not a desirable length of time to stay on antibiotics. Although I never had any side effects (yeast infections, decreased immune system functioning), I could tell my skin was becoming completely dependent on my dose of mino per day…if I ever forgot to take my dosage, I would completely break out within a couple of days. So again, while mino was good at maintaining my acne, it never cured it.

I was getting fed up with the large pores and extremely greasy skin, so I finally decided to go on accutane. My derm put me on 10 mg/day, and I've been on it for almost 3 weeks now. I haven't had many side effects, except for lips that are drier than usual. It's been great - for the FIRST TIME in 10 years my skin actually feels clean, since accutane is starting to dry it out. I would like to go up to 20 mg/day in order to dry out my skin completely, and my derm says he'll put me up to that strength in a couple of weeks. I'm thoroughly impressed with the results - the imperfections with my skin (large pores, cross-hatched lines) are greatly diminished. A lot of people are scared about the possible side effects, but the reality is that the worse ones are EXTREMELY rare…I was literally terrified of going on accutane after reading all the stories, and realizing that my marginal benefit of going on accutane probably didn't outweigh the marginal costs, since my acne was not that bad. I'm so happy I went on it though - if your derm monitors you closely, you don't have too much to be worried about. I really think it's worth going on even with mild to moderate acne. I honestly feel so much more confident already.

Good luck to you all with your meds…if you have any questions at all, please respond. I'll try to reply as soon as possible.
