I have used Retin-A and Retin-A micro. Retin-A cream (prescription strenght) is very strong and will make your skin peel. It works somewhat for acne but it makes your skin peel A LOT! However this is a good thing. See if your skin peels it is sloughin off the dead skin cells which clog pores. It does make your skin smoother after the peeling stops. Retin-A micro is a milder form of Retin-A. It's not a strong with the peeling but i don't think it helps that much for acne. These creams will make the fine lines etc. diminish with time. I don't really think it does much for discoloration since retin-A is basically prescribed mainly for wrinkles and acne.
I used Retin A for 2 yrs- micro 6mos. Both made my skin so red it was almost worse than the acne. It did clear me, mainly because of the peeling. My cysts got worse when I quit- coincidence? I don't know. I can give it credit though for improving fine lines/sun damage. As horrible as the red was, I'm considering using the Obagi program for wrinkle prevention- it uses a very mild Retin lotion. I am in my thirties, clear on B5, but now get to look forward to wrinkles.
