This will probably work for anyone with acne.

First, let me say that I've been around this board for about a year and a half. I'm 22, white male, had moderate cystic acne for 7 years. Experimented with almost every drug except Accutane, and tried changing my diet with little luck.

I am now doing 2 things to control my acne, and they aren't that hard.
1. Taking high-dose MSM powder (30g/day for about a month, now I'm on 5-10g/day). Stuff tastes like poison but it is so good for skin. Also applying Trimedica 15% MSM cream twice a day, which makes my skin very supple and smooth.
2. This is the important part: for two weeks I have been eating ABSOLUTELY NO GRAINS. No bread, no pasta, no pizza, no oatmeal, no cereal, no pastries, etc. I avoid starch in general. No potatoes, no corn, no starchy vegetables. It sounds really hardcore, but it's NOT that hard to do. But if you really want to see if this will work for your acne, you need to do it ALL OR NOTHING. Meaning, don't sneak a bite of Granny's carrot cake. Not even a strand of spaghetti. Some of the problems with grains, besides their high carbohydrate content, is related to allergies, so even tiny amounts of grains (esp. wheat) can mess you up.

So what DO I eat? Meat. Lots of (organic) meat. Organic eggs (eggs are VERY healthy, cholesterol is vital for your system-- http://www.mercola.com/2001/nov/24/cholesterol.htm, eggs are the single most nutrient-rich source in the animal kingdom). Green non-starchy vegetables. Lots of them. Some fruit, although I try not to eat too much because of its high sugar content. Beans, which have quite a few carbs but I seem to be able to take them as I'm no longer breaking out. And I've actually been eating tons of dairy too, but let me qualify by saying that what I have been eating is organic GRASSFED yogurt, cheese, and butter. Grassfed dairy is FAR better (better types of fats) than commercial factory-cow dairy.

See http://www.mercola.com/diet.htm for more info on this diet. It may seem crazy to you, but I've found it's very easy, and the vast improvement in my skin after 7 years of pimps is WELL worth forgoing grains. Also, it goes without saying that if you're serious about trying this, you should definitely avoid refined sugar altogether. Fruit is OK, although you should probably cut back and increase your green vegetable intake in its place.

I think this regimen is worth trying for anyone with acne bad enough to be on this board. Try it for 2 weeks. If you see no improvement, start eating grains again. But its likely that you will see MAJOR improvement, I think. After 2 weeks, you can evaluate the situation and decide if it's worth it for you.

How could grains, which we are told to eat 6-11 servings per day by health "experts", be bad for us? Well think about this: in the 10,000 years since the dawn of agriculture (i.e., since the day humans began eating more and more grains and less meat and vegetables), human brain size has DECREASED 8-11%. Yeah. It's on that site and it's scientifically documented.

Also, I suspect that fluoridated (i.e. almost any tap water in any town or city) water exacerbates acne. I've been drinking bottled water and brushing my teeth with pure baking soda for several months and this could be part (or even most) of the improvement that I've seen.

Consider also the fact that, until 1900 or so, when highly-processed grain foods became staples, humans had perfect teeth. Little tooth decay to speak of. I don't think you'll find any cavities in the teeth of skeletal remains of ancient humans, and they sure didn't brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste.

And another thing: I used to take TONS of supplements, but soon after stopping everything except 50mg zinc gluconate a day, my skin improved. Again, I changed several variables at once so I'm not sure how much of my improvement could be attributed to this. But zinc is good. Take zinc.

Good luck, you beautiful people. I don't really hang around this board much these days, plus I have finals, so if you all ask a million questions and I don't answer, it's because I'm forgetting to check the site and/or I haven't the time. The links contained herein should keep y'all busy.

"pimps" is slang for pimples, that was intentional.

I seriously doubt that fluoride helps acne (or teeth for that matter) in any way. It probably makes it worse.

Eggs are very good for you. You shouldn't eat them every day, but eat them several times a week.
