Re: What are cysts?
Feb 25, 2002
Pretty much the same thing as zits, only bigger.

They are formed the same way as zits-- sebum collected into a pore, the sebum builds up in the pore and becomes infected = zit/cystic acne. The thing about cysts are, they start off small, but in someway they are aggrevated and the surrounding walls of the pore breaks, which leads to the cyst becoming bigger and bigger, (the walls of the pore which have been broken into become the sac of the cyst). That is why it's hard to get rid of cystic acne through means of topical medications. Because some of the sac portion of the cyst are deep down in the dermo of the skin. in which case, treatments such as antibiotics work great with cyst because they work from the inside out, stopping the cyst from coming to head and forming a whitehead.

If my explaination is somewhat vague or you want more info, go to any search engine and type "cystic acne" they should be able to list numbers of articles/documentations on cystic acne.
