Re: Tetracycline

Staying on anti-biotics indefinately is NOT THE WAY TO FIGHT ACNE. Derms kept me on antibiotics for 11 years straight with no improvement, and not only that, I suffered with such severe yeast overgrowth, that is almost destroyed my health. This isn't mellow drama here. I'm not exaggerating.

Take some blood cleansing herbal combinations you get from the health food, some MSM crystals, some B5 and stay away from sugar. Do some peels and glycolic acid containing products.

You may have to spend a few bucks, but at least you won't risk destroying your health, and you'll get better results.

I really cannot emphasize this, but don't just trust derms. Don't do it. You take control of your own skin and only put so much trust in derms.

Only in doing research myself have I found stuff that truly work.

I told my dermatologist on no uncertain terms that I will not go on antibiotics or accutane. He understood where I was coming from.

Another weird thing too is that my derm is a good man and I believe takes his profession seriously, but he says the goofiest things to me. When I told him that I discovered that my foundation and some facial cleansers broke me out he tried to insinuate that I wasn't right in thinking that. Well duh....it's my skin!!!!!!

Ever since I've removed certain products from my skin care regimen, there has been remarkable improvement in my skin.

If I were you guys, I'd go a different route for your internal bacteria fighting. You are only compounding health problems. I mean...what about antibiotic drug resistance risk?

These are things you should consider.

I don't mean any disrespect towards anyone but keeping people on antibiotics for years and putting them on one, then another doesn't do anything for acne in the long run. Believe me people....I'm 38 and didn't go to derms for about 12 years because I didn't trust them. I got desperate about 1 year ago because glycolic acid products weren't working anymore for me. Now, I go to a derm for my Retin-A, a plastic surgeon for laser treatments and microderm, and am going to a doc who specializes in acne scars 2 hours from my house....but he is one of the best in the country.

Educate yourself! That's the best advice I can give you guys.

If I were you, I'd do some peels and some copper peptides topicals. You can combine these with what you are currently using, you'll just have to be careful to ease off on the Retin A and use a mild facial cleanser with no additives (Avalon facial cleanser is wonderful) for a day before and a day or two after you do a peel.

You can do word searches on glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acid peels.

Try B5 therapy and take some blood cleansing herbs. You can get these at any GNC or health food store.

You definately should get off the sodas. The additives and sugar do make you break out. If you are sensitive to sugar, sodas are the worst thing for your skin.

Make sure you cleansers and make-up products aren't breaking you out.

There are a lot of things for you to do, that won't cost an arm and a leg.

The laser treatments I've been getting aren't really for my acne, but for broken blood vessels and a condition called sebacious hyperplasia (which is overgrown oil glands that look a bit like closed comedones).

I hate to admit this because I don't want to encourage anyone to do this....but I have put a lot of these things on my credit card (a few microderms and part of the laser treatments) because I've been so desperate.

Bottom line: quit thinking your dermatologist is God and do the work yourself.

If your acne isn't severe and leaving huge scars, I wouldn't consider accutane. Do a word search on side effects and read it well before you decide to go on it. It's only about 3 pages long.......

Good luck and take control of your acne!
