Happy (early) 2011 to all! I just wanted to let you know that I have been on 50 mg/daily of Spironolactone for 2 1/2 months now, and am acne-free! I will give you a brief history--I am 53 years old and have add acne off and on during my life, at some times worse than others. I have used one course of accutane (which helped for a couple of years), along with antibiotics, creams, soaps, etc.

I would like to tell everyone something very important about Spiro and WHY dermatologists don't prescribe it. I finally figured this out, after I was the one who had to approach my dermatoligist after nothing was working. I started to take HRT (hormone replacement therapy) with a pill called "Ortho-prefest". This medication made my face as worse as it has ever been. I was the one that had to ask my dertmatologist if I would be a good candiate for spiro. He was very aprehensive and told me it doesn't work for everyone. I applied some pressure and he finally gave in. The first 3-4 weeks I was on it, I had cystic acne like I never had in my life! I am so glad I stuck with it because now my face is completely clear after 2 1/2 months of being on it. The point I am making is this: THE REASON DERMATOLOGISTS DO NOT PRESCRIBE SPIRO, is because they know they will lose you as a patient! Let's face it, it is a proven fact that spiro works in 80% of acne patients. If every derm prescribed this to a female patient with acne and it works, there is no reason to keep on seeing the derm. You can just as easily get this medication from a regular M.D. So everyone, you can see that is why YOU have to ask for this medication and are NOT offered it. It took me a while to figure this out, but it makes perfect sense. So, do all of us a favor--spread the word as much as you can about Spiro--it is a miracle drug for all with acne and dermatologists know this. They don't want to lose your business because they do not want to lose money! Shame, shame on them. I had the same dermatologist for 30 years, and you probably can guess that I am going to kick him to the curb--mostly for telling me that nothing else could be done for my acne at this point, when indeed something could be done (spiro).

If you have not tried it yet, I strongly suggest that you talk to your dermatologist or regular famliy doctor about it. I am only on 50 mg per day at $1.40 a month. Can you believe it? It has worked a miracle for me, and it will for you, too.

Good luck to all!
