Want to help
Feb 22, 2003
This message is for those who have tried everything for their ACNE, and for those whose Derms have not considered them a candidate for ACCUTANE. For some reason I have this overwhelming desire to try and help someone and prevent all the years of frustration that I went through.

I have had a moderate case of ACNE for 15 years. I am 28 years old and on my 4th month of ACCUTANE. I have not had one pimple for 2 months now. I have seen 10 dermatologists to date, and 9 did not want to put me on Accutane. They said my "ACNE was not severe enough". Well....thank you Mr. and Mrs. Dermatologist!!!! Do you see my face every morning in the mirror when you wake up? Do you dread trying to live life day to day because of these huge RED swollen bumps on your face? Severity is in the eyes of the beholder I think.

Anyway...I would consider myself and expert in this subject, because I have tried everything else too. Washing with many over the counter cleansers, toners, gels, creams, etc. Vitamin and Herbal therapy. Prescriptions such as Doxycline, Monocycline, Tetracycline, Benzaclyn (sp?), Differin, Retin-a Micro, Cleocin-T, Tazorac... the list just grows. Even home remedies such as baking soda, peroxide, and milk of magnesia. Not to mention numerous and painful cortisone injections. None of this garbage worked for me and made my ACNE/SKIN worse. Oh and Proactiv....this stuff is a waste of your time and money. I hate those commercials. Some of these companies are out to make a buck for themselves and don't give a Rat's A$$ about your skin problem. As long as you keep feeding them money, they're happy.

Of course when starting to use any of these products you might seem to be getting great results. But they don't last long. For example when I started Tetracycline and Doxycycline, it worked for the first 3 months, but by then end of my treatment I swear my ACNE mutated to some sort of super ACNE. You can build a resistance to this medication and then it will not have any effect. Their is nothing more disappointing then waiting 2-3 months for a treatment to work to only have it not work or have it work for a short period and then re-lapse.

You might here that they're 3 related causes of ACNE.

In my opinion, they all lead to 1 cause...OIL. Stop the over production of OIL, stop the ACNE.

My major cause of ACNE was oil, or sebum. I had very oily skin. Everyday, about 2hrs after washing my face I would have to blot oil on my forehead, nose and cheeks. I had Cystic, pustule type acne, and blackheads. I only had a very minor case of ACNE on my forehead (about 1-3 pimple every couple of months). I had a moderate form on my cheeks and temples, having sometimes 8 cysts at a time. 1 almost each week. As one started to go away a new one would pop up. Sometimes I had really deep cysts which lasted for MONTHS, and then eventually caused scarring. My beard line, where the hair grows on my face, never even seen a zit, my chin...clear. My heads....many hours in front of the mirror, pushing out these little worm looking plugs. My shoulders and back had a mild case.

One faithful day, my primary derm was out sick and I saw one of her associates. I received the typical attitude that I have always received, (it seemed like I was just another number to him, and he wanted to get on with his day and see the next patient). I demanded from him that I needed something to control this oil from the inside out. 15 years was too long, and having ACNE as an adult is even worse when you were a kid. Nothing topical was working for me, nothing antibiotic related was either. He put me on Accutane. Of course I had to have my blood tested and etc. I am not going to go into the ACCUTANE related stuff because you can most likely find that info on this or other message boards.

Quickly I'll mention that I have experience the normal side effects that you most likely have read about,.. dry nose, lips, rash, maybe some joint pain. Trust me, they are all worth it and they are mild and go away.

My skin is no longer oily, my pores have shrunk. My skin looks fantastic. I wash with Cetaphil in the morning and the night and put on the Neutrogena Acne Treatment lotion with the Vitamins and that's it!!! What used to be a 100 step morning and nightly ritual...applying creams lotions, toners, etc. Has now been simplified to 2. I have my life back and feel more confident in my appearance. I only hope this lasts, when I finish my treatment. I have been spoiled by new appearance and would hate to have it taken away from me again. I wish I would have been put on ACCUTANE earlier.

Hope this information helps you!
