Hi everyone, i am on my fourth day on 100 mg spiro. So far i have no side effects ....I did noticed my skin is less oily, less white heads and my cystic acne has shrunk considerably....the color and texture has improved too.... I think my improvement is contributed with my washing regimen and my topical regimen in combination with the spiro. I can't wait for the next few months....I think I will be acne free....but I might have to take this until I reach menopause (it will be very soon...I am already 47yrs old)

This is what I do every nite.....u see I wear makeup during the day...so I need to clean my face really well in the evening. So I use five type of cleanser (spectro jel, clean&clear makeup remover, [email protected] shinefree cleanser and a clinique scrub)every nite and I don't use any instrument...I just use my own fingers to clean my face. (you see if you use a cloth or scrubber, no matter how much you clean these items....it will never be bacteria free)..

after washing....I would pour some distilled witch hazel on a cotton pad and swipe all over my face ....I will do this twice and then I will put a dab of moisturizer (tea tree, vit e antiseptic cream from dermea) on each area, rub it in to the skin until it disappears ....then I will put salylicic acid gel 2% all over my face....lastly i will use shisedo eye/lip cream on my eye and lips.

In the morning, I will use SNAP gentle scrub cleanser to clean my face and then swipe a cotton pad drench with witch hazel to prepare for the moisturizer. Because I wear makeup, you need to have a moisturizer that will give you moisture and control your pimple outbreak too.....I recommend clean&clear moisturizer with salylicic acid ...remember when you put it on you need to rub it until it disappears on the skin ....for me I need extra help on the acne...I use a 1% salylicic acid clinique acne spot treatment gel all over my areas that have pimples .....finally i am ready for my makeup...even the makeup i use is for blemish skin (almay blemish clear foundation, concealer and press powder).

I don't want people to think that you cannot wear makeup because you have acne....you can wear it...is just that you need to wash your face regularly and wash it very well. and finally it is very important to use the right makeup too. Good luck to all girls who want to look pretty.
Hello laporte, I have taken spiro for the past year for acne and I think it works great, but keep in mind that it works really gradually. I think it actually made me breakout for a while before i became clear (took about 3 months). Over the past several months I've tapered down to the lowest possible dose, as I could not stand how dry it made my skin and weird side effects started developing and bothering me. Watch out for bloating and weight gain in your lower torso/body in a couple of months (yes, I know it's a diuretic, but oddly, it began to have the opposite effect for me later on!).

I wear tons of makeup too, but I just use Olay Foaming Facewash in Sensitive, and then Paula's Choice Skin Balancing toner. Every other night I use Retin A gel in either .025% or .01%. Works fine for me, but I seem to break out if I use too much powder makeup or stray from the retins for too long--or worse, if I use oils on my face (just the other night i stupidly used emu oil and woke up with the first cystic/nodular type acne I've had in a really long time).
Hi crookedhearts, thanks for your advice..... oh no I don't want bloating and weightgain...I don't need it...Yes, I agree about breaking out more in the beginning because I am suffering from it now and I am only on my 2nd week...so you say in three months time my skin will be pimple free....so are you still on spiro?? Do I have to take it until menopause?? and what kind of moisturizer do you use now...(since your skin has gone dry instead of oily) you also mentioned about strange side effects....pls elaborate....are you on a low potassium diet too?? I read up that spiro stores potassium...does not excrete it ....

Regarding the Makeup/skincare.....I wish I can use Retin A...but I tried once before ..It irritated my skin.....so far saliycic acid is good for me.

Please give me more pointers....I really appreciate it.
Yeah, retin a irritates my skin too and sometimes makes me look like crap (it's like a chemical peel and sometimes just takes longer for my skin to bounce back from it), but I try to get around it by using it as little as I can.

As for spiro, my dr has never mentioned menopause because I am in my later twenties. I am still reluctantly taking a small dose, but to be honest, I've really grown to hate it--and i was never even on a high dose (just 25mgs 2x a day!). I am not on birth control right now so I don't wanna deal with the annoying side effects, you know?

I am not on any special diet but I am in good shape and eat really healthy (lots of fruits and veggies etc) and I have always kept myself really hydrated throughout the day (just a habit). Yet the dehydration spiro gave me never seemed to go away, and it really bothered me. Also, I would not get my period for months and months and i think it increased my depression slightly. I tried to ignore all of these things but then I realized my butt had also grown 2 inches as well! ***?!

I tried to quit taking it immediately and I immediately broke out, so then I just tried to cut down. I dunno, it's so weird, because it still works, but I still feel like I have never fully gone back to normal even with a smaller dose. Like my facial hair--which was normal before--got really light and barely grew. I still barely have to pluck my eyebrows and as I said, I barely take spiro anymore. I only take 1/2 of a pill 2x a day. This seems to be the lowest dose I can take to stave off both the acne and dryness spiro gives me. If it helps, I suspect that I am just really sensitive to hormones--I can't even take b-control without getting annoying side effects either.

I like Cerave am and pm lotion--really basic, but non irritating stuff, and it shouldn't clog your pores. If you find that you're still dry with Cerave, maybe try adding Paula's Choice Advanced Replenishing toner or her Skin Balancing toner instead of witch hazel (which can be very irritating). Good luck! I am sure spiro will work for you, so don't worry and try to be patient!

Thanks for getting back to me so fast crookedhearts....As you know i am on a 100mg and I am 47 years old....so I don't know if I will suffer the same side effects as you....i hope not...regarding the butt size...my butt is not small right now...I don't think it will look very good if it grows another 2 more inches...lets cross our fingers it will not happen. well it says many perimenopausal females suffers frm acne and spiro is the cure ...this is what I have found on the net. I am not on birth control either. (with my age you don't need it) i did take it once in my twenties....I did not like the side effects too.

Wondering are you getting regular bloodwork?? You have to keep track of your blood pressure and your glucose because the main use for spiro is to lower your blood pressure for heart disease people.....

As for my periods, lately in the last year, they have been very irregular already...so I don't really miss it. eventually I will not have it. I am crossing my finger that i don't suffer from depression too.

I was wondering how is your digestion....r u regular? I take metamucil every day because I suffer frm IBS too...Luckily, I am taking it because my low potassium/sodium diet excludes a lot of high fibre foods. I never knew high fibre food contains such high potassium content.

Regarding facial hair, I noticed my eyelashes is fuller and my mustache is not growing anymore too. weired right??

Where can I get the moisturizer you recommended?? in health food stores or typical drug stores.

I do have one more question about your break outs....r u breaking out at weird places like your back, hairlines, chest, scalp, cheeks, around your mouth and back of your neck? you see i always had pimple here or there since as a teenager..it was always on my forehead only but now it has spread to these weired places

Anyways, thank you so much for your support......as i am on my 2nd week....I will keep you up to date with my spiro treatment. Thanks again:angel:
