I have a pretty big decision to make with regards to my acne. My dermatologist recommended accutane, but of course the side effects are pretty scary. If I had the type of acne you see in ads for Accutane, then I wouldn't have as much hesitation. I do have the occasional cystic acne which sucks, but I feel like the majority of the acne on my face are whiteheads. Do you really give people accutane for whiteheads?

Quick background about my situation: I went through high school using proactiv and never had an issue with acne. Once I turned 21 my acne got worse, but I stuck with the proactiv. It wasn't until last summer that I went and saw a dermatologist (I am now 23) who prescribed me 100MG of Doxycycline once a day, along with Differen (Adapalene .3%) taken at nights, and Clindamycin Phosphate and Benzoyl Peroxide Gel (1/2%/5%) during the day.

After a few months with a little bit of improvement he gave me IC Cefadroxil 500MG once a day along with using Tazorac 0.05% instead of the Differen. I would say my face pretty much remained the same and if there were any improvements it was minor. I had been washing my face with some Neutrogena product when I initially started at the dermatologist and then switched to Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar to wash my face while moisturizing with Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer (Non-Comedogenic, Non-Oil). I just purchased Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser and will be switching to that tonight as I believe it will be less-drying on my face.

There have been times where I thought I saw the light at the end of the tunnel, most recently around Christmas. I felt my skin was starting to clear up, and then I came down with the flu and therefore did not follow through with my regimen as I normally would, which resulted in a break-out that I still have not recovered from. Do you think Accutane is too drastic for the situation in which I described? Are they just giving it to anyone with moderate acne now due to its effectiveness?
