... I've been on retin-a cream (0.05%) for about 4 months. I had the same problem around the 2nd month. But I just lived with it and the redness eventually cleared. One thing you NEED to do to minimize irritation is to wait 20-30 min after cleaning your face. This is to make sure your face is completely dry. Assuming that you're not using retin-a micro!
