Stratera thoughts
Mar 22, 2004
I'm a 36 year old male who was diagnosed with ADD roughly 4 months ago. My problems included forgetfulness, being scatterbrained, procrastination, being late to things frequently, and major disorganization. As an adult, I never experienced the hyper-activity, but I just may not have noticed. I was started on Stratera at 25 mg. This is the first time I've taken meds. At first it seemed like a whole new world was opening up to me. I seemed to have a new desire to be organized and to start and finish things. My memory also improved. I moved on to 50 mg per day, then 75 mg on to my current 100 mg per day. I'm 6-5, and weigh approx. 270, so my doctor thought the high dose would work due to my size. We just kept increasing because I kept telling the doctor that I was having small improvements, but wasn't where I wanted to be.

My observations:
- started out great. now don't nearly have as many "good" days
- I seem emotionless at times. I have a hard time feeling happy. My wife
tells me that I seem flat all of the time.
- When I do get emotional, it's anger. I blow up.
- My focus seems introverted. I dwell more on my thoughts than what I'm
doing. I focus more on the things I feel that are "bad".
- Many times I feel unmotivated. I spent the whole weekend laying around and napping more than usual.
- I feel sluggish at times like I'm walking in cement
- I have occasional body tingles
Side effects:
- Have a tired spell about mid-day. I take my meds in the morning.
- seem to focus more on non-important things
Sexual side effects:
- none of the "out of sinc" orgasms/ejaculation
- do have a more trouble gaining/maintaining erection
- more intense orgasm, less intense ejaculation, some times there is pain following orgasm/ejaculation
- do not have urinary discomfort others have listed

I go back to the doctor this week and am planning on discussing trying something else or at the very least cutting back from 100 mg. per day. Has anyone else developed similar problems as you've increased the daily dosage?

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience.
I am on 40 mg, and have been for two months now. I've noticed that the medication doesn't seem to be as forceful as it had been in the past, but it still works, and I know that If I go off of it, I'll go right back to the way I was. Even at this minimal level, the benifits are still great.

I still have the out of synch issues and the difficulty with keeping it up after a bit of use, but I've found that even one drink really helps this out alot. It seems counterproductive, but it does work for me.
I'm a 29 yo male who was recently diagnosed with ADD and I also started Stratera as my first medication in response to it. After 3 months and upping the dosage to 100mg from 40mg I also have stopped. I was/am suffering from the same sweet of ailments as you describe, forgetfullness, inablility to get things started, procrastination...I dont even want to go there.

The Stratera was working great for me so I thought, the first month was just as you described, a whole new world was available to me and I was ready for the challenge, but after 3 months, I was still forgetting to take the meds occasionally and the "good days" were just about used up.

I now attribute the great beginning to a combination of therapy and the diagnoses, the realization that there might be a bit of life that I am missing and my eagerness to get involved in it. The strattera was helping I think, but not enough.

At any rate, I stopped cold turkey, gave myself 30 days and I just took my first 18mg dose of Concerta. Let's see how this does.

I am unsure of exactly what ails me or what I need, but I figure 3 months on this and if Im not happy, then it will be 3 months on Aderall and then maybe Ridalin....I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm going to the doctor today to get off Stratera and try to find something better for me. I've just been feeling too lousey lately. I find myself being more depressed if I do something wrong. I tend to dwell on the worst case scenario for a long time. Plus I feel unmotivated pretty much all the time. If I didn't have a job to go to every morning, I think I would have a hard time getting out of bed. Weekends are a ***** that way. All I seem to want to do is sleep. I'll post my results.
25 year old male, just started Strattera. working up to 75 mg/day. Day 1 was 25 Day 2 (today) was 50. Minimal side effects - slight drowsiness paired with a weird immediate alertness when I choose to stop drowsing- also maybe a tad of flatulence but hey coulda been the cabbage. :)
I am already on 18mg concerta 4 tabs/ day (3 morning 1 midday)

too early to tell any results... maybe more focus but i didnt have much work to do today or tasks that would be affected by my ADD. Will keep you all posted on what happens.
I'm now tappering off Stratera for one week. 60 mg for 2 days, 40 mg for 3 days and 25 mg for 2 days. I'm day 2 into the 40 mg and feel much better. I need to wait one week after stopping the Stratera then will start Adderall. We'll see how that goes...
I am a 29 year old male who just started Strattera back in November 2003. I started out at 40mg, then advanced to 80. At first I thought it was working, but I think I may have been just talking myself into that misconception. I ended it after 2 months as I didnt see much improvement in concentration and "scatterbrain-ness", plus my co-pays were $50!

Side Effects included:
--Orgasm felt less intense, and is more effort to stay erect.
--I had ejaculation right before and after orgasm and trouble urinating.
--twinges of pain in penis

So Ive been off for about 3 weeks now, but still feeling the side effects such as the slight penis pain. Orgasm is back to normal, but still took a good 2 weeks after stopping medication. Anyone else have side effects even after going off??
Today is my last day of "ramping down" from 100 mg to being off Stratera. I'm on 25 mg today. Last night I was dizzy for most of the night. Today, I feel great. I actually have happy thoughts going through my head that will cause me to smile out of the blue. It's been months since that has happened! Tommorow I'm off completely then start Adderall a week later.
I started the Adderall XR today. I don't know if I feel different or not. I think I'm more focused, but it may just be from knowing that I started something new. I do know that after one day, I don't have any side affects! I certainly don't feel like I'm on speed or anything like that. I'm taking the minimum dosage right now. My doctor believes in taking it slow.
I don't plan on posting a reply every day, but want to post things I notice when first on a new med. Today was the first time that I had to sit through any lengthy meetings since I started on Adderall XR. I made it through one that was 2.5 hours and was pretty attentive throughout.

Also, compared to Strattera, I'm not feeling as flat emotionally. I know it's only been a couple of days, but so far, so good!

I'm very interested in hearing what you have to say..pretty similar experiences but I'm still on 75 mg of strattera right now... 2 in morning 1 in afternoon...

Thinking of switching to ritalin or adderal
I should change the thread to "Adderall Thoughts". I've been on Adderall XR for about a week now. So far, so good. I had the desire to get a lot of projects started and finished over the weekend. I worked in the yard all day Saturday and felt great. And best of all...I didn't get bored in the middle of any of my projects and quit! The only limiting factor is that I did so much on Sat., that age kicked in on Sunday morning and I was pretty stiff.

I've also had the desire to chase my wife around the house, so I'm not seeing any sexual side effects.
I just picked up a copy of the book 'You mean I'm not Lazy, Stupid, or Crazy'. What I find interesting is how the book is formatted for us ADD folks. It has short paragraphs, large print and so far I've noticed that they don't carry sentences over from one page to the next. Interesting. It's amazing how the more I learn about ADD, the more I'm able to recognize my own episodes (couldn't think of a better word). As I'm reading, I now recognize almost the instant that I lose concentration. I will be reading along fine, then the next paragraph I will realize that I can't focus on the pargraph from start to finish. I will find myself skipping from sentence to sentence and viewing all the words as a whole rather than following the sentences. It's wild, but kind of cool at the same time. Once I recognize it, I feel I can work on it.
I tried strattera about 8 months ago. i immediately noticed sexual side affects...like within 8 hours of taking my first dose. The out of sync orgasm/ejaculation happened first, then within a day or 2 the pain after ejaculation came. needless to say, after about a week of that was enough for me. i have limits, and i have lines in the sand that i don't want to cross. and one of them is medicine that significantly changes anything sexual in my body. just don't like the whole idea of it.

i then went on 30mg of adderall XR. That has been and still is great. I'm still on the same dose, and it is fantastic. i know can focus much better, and the extra energy boost is also great. i couldn't be more pleased. the only side affect i have noticed is that when the dose wears off and i start coming down, i get extremely aroused and am generally hunting down the wife. that side affect i can live with :p

good luck,
b

Haha...nice, I wouldn't mind living with that sorta side effect. With strattera, I noticed that initial out of sync orgasm only in the first 3 days. Then after that it was somewhat reduced in sensation for a week, then everything went back to normal. There were also a few instances where it was hard to initiate urinating. This too disappeared after a week or two.
The main thing I'm wondering, did you ever experience episodes of fatigue and tiredness while on the strattera?
Also, do you get those episodes on Adderal?

Thanks!
My sexual side effects were minor compared to others I've read here. Mostly lack of volume and force of ejaculation and some pain afterward. Now that I'm off Stratera and on Adderall XR, this has returned to normal. The most interesting sexually related side effect was if my wife wasn't in the mood and I was, I would get really depressed and paranoid feeling. Like 'oh your not interested in me tonight....must have someone else on the side then'. It's when those types of thoughts started creeping into all areas of my life was when I decided to get off Stratera.

It's been roughly three weeks on Adderall XR. It's been great so far. I'm really more assertive at work, and feel great overall. I still need to learn to organize and manage time, but hopefully that will come.

I go back to the doctor on May 5th. I'm going to ask him to up my dosage just to see what happens. I'm on the lowest dose now. I will post my results.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, I didn't really feel like doing much of anything. Seems like all I did for a week straight was watch seinfeld and history channel. So, all and all, strattera did absolutely nothing for me. I was very surprised at the lack of any improvement what so ever. But everyone is different. I just think the amphetamines in adderall just mesh with my body really well. Hate to say this.....but......even if i didn't have adhd, i'd want this on a daily basis. :bouncing:

b
As my stratera dosage increased, I became more lethargic. There were a couple of weekends when I couldn't get off the couch. I was either sleeping or didn't have the desire to do anything. That sucked because I have a 2 & 6 year old. I should have been playing with them!

I have seen no side effects yet with Adderall XR. I'm not 'zombied out' like I was on Stratera, but I'm not zipped up like someone on speed either. So far, it's been really nice.
My 12 yr old son started Stratta in February after having to come off the Adderall. There was some improvement, but was not nearly as focused as he had been with the adderall. So they upped the dose about a month and a half ago. He became much more agitated, and very sleepy and the focus was worse. Well, they lowered the dose back down to where he had been after he had a melt-down at school. The focus was still bad, and he is still very tired. They just lowered the dose again, and now they have added Concerta to the mix. We are less than a week into it, but so far it is looking very promising.
I just went to the doctor to day and he bumped my Adderall XR from 10 mg per day to 15 mg per day. So far, 10 mg has been pretty good. I'm hoping for even better with the increase.
I was taking 10mg of Adderall a day, but while I was taking it, my heart wasn't reacting too well to it. Rapid pulse, irregular beats ect. So my doc started me on 40mg of Strattera a day, and wants me to up it to 80 a day tomarrow.
Of corse, after the first dose I immediately noticed the side effects. I started to feel like I was "zoning out" I would walk around and it felt like I was a zombie or something. I noticed a bit of drowsiness, nothing to bad. I definately noticed some nausia, and some headaches.
Then of corse, came the sexual side effects, pretty much exactly the same as most of you have described. I'm a 19 year old male, so when I noticed some of these problems it kinda scared the crap out of me. I'm getting engaged soon, and I don't like the thought of not being able to have children or anything like that.
I stopped taking it right away, but I'm wondering what to do next. Do I hold off on taking it to see if things get better? Do I stick with the meds and hope things work themselves out? The last thing I want is to cause some permanent damage, and I'm afraid that might happen if I keep taking it.
I'm running out of options as far as meds go. I can't go with anything stimulant related, so that rules out Adderall, and Ritalin. The only other one my doc has really mentioned is Wellbutrin, but I don't like the sound of any of those side effects either. And I haven't heard of anyone that it has really helped their ADD.
I am now taking 15 mg of Adderall XR. I feel good, but I'm not really noticing much regarding increased focus. I don't have any of the side effects that I've read about, so that is a positive. I just get frustrated because I want these to be miracle drugs! Is the amount I'm taking a low dose?
The doctor just upped my Adderall XR dosage from 15 mg to 30 mg. It's only been a couple of days now. I felt a little buzzed from it on day one. Hopefully this will help the concentration level! 15 mg. just wasn't cutting it. I didn't have any side effects, but it really didn't help my concentration. I'm maxed out at 30 mg. now. We'll give this a go for another couple of months, hopefully with successful results!
Have you found that the Strattera has mad you moody and edgy?
Yes, looking back, I think it really did make me edgy and moody. I didn't realize it until I decided to go off of it. At that time I realized that it was really messing me up mentally. I think I was slowly drifting into a depression before I realized what was going on and got off of the Stratera. I then tried Adderall XR, up to a dose of 30 mg. The Adderall XR had a decent effect at first. Then after a while, I didn't notice anything, good or bad. No side effects, but no real benefit either. I was rampped up to 30 mg per day. I took Adderall for three or four months. By the end, I was finding myself "spacing out" in meetings, and being easily distracted at other times. So I'm off Adderall and starting Ritalin long lasting today. I just took it for the first time a couple of hours ago, so I don't have an opinion yet. This is getting very frustrating for me!
I think the Ritalin LA may show some promise. I started on a "monkey bar" project for my kid's swing set earlier this spring. I actually bought the kit last summer. This weekend, after being on Ritalin for a week, I got up in the morning, determined that I was going to get it done, worked on it all day and finished the job. There were some frustrations and a start over, but I didn't quit like I would have in the past. All summer I've told my wife that I couldn't figure out how to build it, but I got past all of that in one day. Sunday I got up and decided to build a climbing wall on the swing set. I also completed that in a day without being distracted on to something else. My kids were thrilled. No hopefully this will last!
I have seen pluses and minuses to Ritalin. That is wonderful that you were able to find something to help you stay on track but please look closely into all your options before taking this for a long period of time. My nephew took this for several years and has developed turetts syndrom. It started with a twitch in his eyes. He now blinks uncontrollably, which is very difficult for a teenager. Kids are very mean.
Anyhow, not trying to scare you from taking the medicine I just woudl liek to share this experience that we had in case others have had it happen to them as well. My nephew is now on a natural herb that apparently works the same without the turretts side effects. The twitching is goign away slowly thankfully.
I know it takes a while for strattera to "kick in" I've been on it for 8 months now and i have been taking 80mg for probably the last 5 of them. I feel good, i treat people better and I seem to stay on a task when I start one but recently I feel like maybe i have a tolerence to it?I mean, should I have the dose increased? I can say this, the side effects really do vary per person. I am tired but not more then usual, the sexual side effects are there to an extent, the "leakage" part applies but honestly I feel "hornier" and my orgasms are much more intense, almost a double.(which is definetly a good thing!) BUT my blood pressure seems high and I sweat like Dom DeLouise on a treadmill! I also cannot focus at work, I'm doing better but still kind of wondering you know? My doctor is kind of clueless on the whole thing with the drug so I need some advice on what you guys think! I'm also too afraid to switch to anything else because I really hated who I "used" to be when I didn't take the drug and I don't want to throw away everything I have accomplished since I've been on it.
I'm a 32 year old-5'3"-116 lb female and was diagnosed with ADD 1 year ago this month, in 8/03. My main concerns was that I was very forgetful and unable to focus. In addition, I developed a contant feeling of anxiety which caused my heart to beat fast and shortness of breath. This was interferring with my ability to do my job and complete simple, daily tasks. My doctor suggested Strattera and started me on it slowly, 8mg --> 60mg per day over a two month period. I wasn't feeling much better at the end of two months, therefore my doctor increased my dosage to 80mg per day which made a huge difference. Over the next 6 months I felt great. My anxiety vanished and I was able to focus on every task I undertook. The side effects weren't too bad; occasional dry mouth and decreased appetite, which contributed to a loss of weight and a low energy level much of the time. Next is when things changed for me. After about 6 months I started to notice unusual spots on my tongue that would disappear and reappear in different places. This caused numbness in my mouth and severe dry mouth which was very bothersome. My doctor told me this wasn't a side effect of Strattera so I continued to take it up until 2 weeks ago. While I was dealing with the dry mouth I began to notice skin infections around my neck (simular to bug bites of some sort) with no explanation of what was causing it. As far as I knew I was healthy so you can imagine that I was beginning to develope anxiety because of these unexplained symptoms. Well, finally I decided I would reduce my dosage of Strattera on my own, slowly, to see if my uncomfortable symptoms would be minimized or disappear completely. I started out by cutting my dosage in half, to 40 mg and immediately noticed several changes; my appetite returned, the spots disappeared on my tongue, my neck cleared up, I slept like a baby at night and my sex drive was suddenly very strong, in a healthy way. It's been about 2 weeks now and I'm still taking 1 pill (40mg per day) instead of the 80mg my doctor prescribed and am feeling better than I've felt in a long time. I plan to wean myself completely off Strattera over the next month. I realize I should probably consult my doctor, however I believe he would prefer I stay on the medication at a higher dosage and I just don't want to deal with the side effects anymore. I have noticed it's a little more difficult to focus and my anxiety has come back just a little, however I'm willing to put more effort into living without having to depend on Strattera. Hopefully I've made the right decision, time will tell.

I didn't intend to go on about my experience for so long on this webboard but I've read several individuals' experiences on Strattera and felt the need to share mine, incase it can help anyone else who might be unsure about the possible side effects he/she might be experiencing. I think Strattera is the better of the ADHD medications available, however maybe it's not one that should be taken for an extended length of time. I hope this helps any who are searching for answers. I know your messages have helped me.....thank you & good luck!
Hello all.

I want to encourage everyone to keep posting their experiences.

I went from adderall to concerta to ritalin to strattera, which I am still on. 80mg per day. I found out that if I do not take strattera with food, I will have wicked heartburn. No sexual side effects.

I am 6'5", 185 lbs.

I am forgetfull and I procrastinate. I often forget to take my pills. Last week I almost forgot to pick up one of my kids from daycare!

My Dr. prescribed Lexapro for me after I told him that I am still thinking about things that don't matter. Like wether I remembered to turn my car alarm on (OCD) or if it bothers me that my wife forgot to buy cups at the grocery store.

Yes, I have been frustated since the beginning. I am still looking for that miracle drug.

Six months ago I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I had my tonsils and adnoids removed. I also had a deviated septum that was fixed. That seemed to work well for a short time. But I went back to falling asleep at work.

A pulmonary doctor suggested I had narcolepsy. Which I thought was a joke. A blood test suggested that I might have it. There is a new drug "provigil" that I might try. I go back for my third sleep study tonight.

I have trouble falling asleep at night. I feel like I could stay up all night on the computer or watching TV. During the day, I could fall asleep in about one second. I tried moving my meds from morning to night and vice versa, but it didn't seem to help.

Anyway, I suggest reading up on narcolepsy and sleep apnea, as they can cuase you to have ADD like symtoms.
With stattera I feel like I'm on a drug. Know what I mean? I feel drugged. And it's retarded expensive - 200 bucks a month. Sex is not enjoyable, it's a chore to finish and you get that burning sensation.

Ritalin just doesn't work for me anymore and when it does I get maybe an hour of clarity. But, you have to jump through the strattera hoop before you can get something that works. Probably the Lilly Pharmaceutical company is giving away trips to Hawaii for the doctors who prescribe this stuff.

Although, some people really seem to like it.

my 13 yr old son was on 40mg then l dropped him down to 25mg.. he was a zombie. I really thought he was "gone" inside. It scared me. He no longer had a personality. I felt like I had lost him. The doctor suggested we take him off for a few weeks during the Summer to see how he did. He "came" back. It was so nice seeing him smile and play again. He did start to show signs of ADHD again, so, we have since put him on a small dose of 10mg. He has started football, but, now his heart rate is way up. Resting rate of over 100mg, so off again. We are not sure if the Strattera is causing this. So, until football is over, no more. I would think you need a smaller dose. Sometimes, less is better. My son, for his age is a big boy, 5'10 and 170lb. So, you may only need 40-60mg per day.. I would say drop down and see how you do.. Being flat is not fun either. And at your age, do you think you really need anything at all? I am 45 and ADHD, and just live with it.. Try a few cups of coffee a day.. lol geri
I went off of the strattera for a week, but I was still a zombie. I am pretty sure that I was asleep more then I was awake this past weekend.

Today I started Provigil, for narcolepsy, or should I say "Excessive Daytime Sleepiness", and I am much more awake, but still a bit sleepy.

We are going to wait and see what the provigil does before going back to the ADD meds such as Adderal XR.
What about being frustrated? My husband is on Strattera and he gets really frustrated and impatient at times..and feels like he is going to scream... he is going to the doctor today, so we will see what happens.
I didn't get frustrated and mad like that. But then again I was on Lexapro.

"ADD" (whatever it is) spawns other "syndromes". Lexapro or something like it might help with the frustration.
Hello everyone. I'm 22years old, female. I started taking Strattera about 2 weeks ago. I have ADHD not to mention anxiety and slight depression (which I don't take medication for). I was prescribed Lexapro from another doctor but I didn't take it. I decided to take Strattera in hopes it will help me with work and specifically school. I've always had a problem concentrating/focusing ALWAYS avoided studying etc.

The side effects I've encountered is upset stomache, it seems like my heart is beating faster, and I've been having a little more problems sleeping. Nothing too dramatic. I'm not sure if it's working just yet but my brain sometimes feels like it's "breathing". Does/did anyone else get that feeling?

I'd love to hear more from other stories and/or advise from other people that have been taking it longer and see if it's really helped. I'm currently taking 40mg once a day and I weigh approx. 185lbs, 5'9.

I had to eat when I took stratera or else I would get really sick. Never had a heartbeat problem. I think lexapro is great. No side effects. Never had the weird brain "breathing" thing.

You and I seem to have gone down similiar paths. I too expierenced many of your symptons. Taking my meds 8 am or earlier, by 2pm I could have fallen asleep standing up. When I returned to my Physican after the first 30 days on Strattera. I explained my situation. He increased meds 40Mg to 80 and perscribed 10 mil gram of lexapro. So I take 10mg of Lexapro and 40mg of Strattera in the Morning, and around 2 or 3pm I take the other 40 mg Strattera. This balances out the sluggishness and makes me more alert and I can foucs and concentrate better.
I wish you well.
